1.9Tdi elegance bought at 60000 miles last September under Skoda Approved used car scheme. Problems so far have been....

1) Air conditioning compressor failed. Not covered under warranty.

Result, no cool air during hot summer. Not going to go with the Dealer fix costing best part of

Wiper linkage seized up?

Yes, that's right. Anyone else ever had this problem?

It is rather common, not just to Skoda also happens alot on MK4 Golf (same part).

1) Airconditioning on my 2001 elegance failed in exactly the same way - managed to pick up a brand new clutch for this on ebay for

AIUI the Octy's problem is different in that it's the spindles siezing, rather than the linkage failing, but I've had linkage failures in 2 different makes of non-VAG cars.

If it was bought under skoda approved and the aircon failed during the warrenty period I don't get how it isn't covered?

As for wiper linkages, yes I have had this problem, and it was done under warrenty by the local dealer.

Think yourself lucky it wasn't a Renault, last lot of Kangoo's we had at work the wiring loom ran under the wiper linkage, and yes you guessed it sawed the loom in half,

Oh yes... I had that. 4 hour tow home, plus 90 minute wait for a tow truck (CSMA / Britannica). Couple of houes work and the linkage was back in the car all cleaned up and return for a drive to Yorkshire in the rain from Somerset!

Hows that car doing without the turbo ;)

It had managed to have the turbo working for half the trip this morning! I'll stick vag-com onit before I go home and see what I can glean from it.

If the laptop battery holds out, I might try logging a few things....

Is there any way of preventing this? I will be working in the wiper linkage area in the next few days, is it worth stripping them down and lubricating or is it non serviceable?

It's perfectly serviceable - I posted a how-to years ago. Basically take the arms off by undoing the nuts, lift the scuttle panel up carefully and take out 3 bolts holding the linkage in, remove from car. Take off circlips at the top of the spindles, then they can be pushed out of the housings, cleaned, relubricated and reassembled. Unless they are seized, the whole process should take under an hour.

Good stuff, thanks for that. I'll get that done tomorrow if the rain holds off :(

Got it done this aftenoon with no problems (except for the circlip which I managed to fire across the garden - school boy error!
