Simply So Clever

Couldn’t understand why my Karoq “bonged” at me when I got in this morning. Nor could I understand why in bright sunlight was the map display night mode, when it’s set to Auto.

Then it “bonged” again when I opened the door to get out. Light bulb moment - the light switch had been knocked from Auto to Side lights. Quite clever really - never ignore a “bong” I think.🤔

Did that several times before I clocked what it was. Surprising how easy it is to move the light switch accidentally with a brush of the knee.

Discovered another one this week. I was just moving the car slightly & hadn't closed the door fully. It was latched but not fully closed. Didn't bother opening & reclosing it as I was only moving a foot. Electronic handbrake said no & wouldn't disengage until the door was fully closed.

I find these things so annoying. Yesterday I received 2 bongs telling me the lane assist and speed warning not available, so what and who cares?

The 2 things I always disable as soon as I start the car. I can do it now without taking my eyes off the road.

Same here and I had already switched it off!!

I heard an interesting one! My B-i-L got a nearly new Sportline Karoq a few months ago. He called me the other day to say his mirrors had suddenly gone 'dark' for a while. I queried whether it was just the internal one but he confirmed it was the external ones as well! Now I'd never heard of external light sensitive mirrors but some googling revealed that some Karoq's do have them. More research indicated that the internal mirror assembly has a rear facing and a forward facing light sensor. If the rear facing one detects its much brighter than the front, then it electrically dims the mirrors!. So why did his do it? Well the sun was reasonably bright at the time but not significantly more bright from the rear. We think we found the reason in the end though!. He had adjusted the cable going from his satnav and we guess that the inline choke module on the cable was blocking light to the front facing sensor!. He's since moved it and it hasn't happened again...

The worst bong for me is the washer bottle, which must be the loudest of all bongs. it can bong a minute after starting off, and then continue to bong at variably spaced intervals during the journey. Totally unnecessary. Surely the car's electronics must be able to sense that the car is moving after sounding the first bong, so why not just display the warning light.

Stretching the thread a little here, but my worst bong was a week after taking delivery of a Polo. This was accompanied by the message "S6 Battery Critically Low". Pulled over & trawled the manual & internet for what S6 meant, without success. Car started OK so I decided to push on with the 75 mile journey home, fretting that the car would die at any moment, but it didn't. Next day the warning had gone. Then the penny finally dropped, it was warning about the battery on my Samsung S6 phone...

There is a moral to this story too. Few years back four new tyres fitted on the Monday - Tuesday morning start the car to go to work, low tyre pressure warning. Ignored as I “knew” better four new tyres all at correct pressure when I reversed into the garage the previous night. 200 yds down the road steering’s very heavy, stopped got out OSF nearly flat. Faulty valve. I no longer ignore warnings!
