oil blowing from the dipstick and oil cap

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm back again thanks to everyone that contributed to my other thread you were all very helpful, now this spaceback drives lovely (having said that due to problems ive only done 20 miles in it) so i decided to do a oil change which all went well except i couldn’t see the level so worried about it not being enough put 500ml more and i could see it i(i put a 4lts in in the beginning, then added the 500ml, but while i was sorting out i had to move the car a few meters to let my wife’s car in and inadvertently left the dip stick out and oil came spouting out so Ive read a bit about it pcv valve and a few other things it could be, if anyone has done one or knows some information that might benefit me it would be greatly appreciated.

There is a reason there is an oil filler cap. It needs fitting. ? sorry i don’t understand, the oil cap was fitted, as it happens Ive ran the the engine with the oil cap just sitting over the oil filler and i think it maybe blow by or is it the car drives well ? i just wanted to know if anyone has experienced it

thank you

With the dipstick removed there could be some oil come out normally same as oil filler cap. If its a spray or steady stream it could be a faulty PCV or as you said blow by caused by worn piston rings or it could have been overfilled.

I would check oil level first to make sure its correct. From memory engine up to temp and then park on flat surface and leave for 5 mins then check level and top up if required.

If its the PCV valve it can cause poor idling and also oil leaks/smokey exhaust if stuck.

Piston rings I assume would cause smoke and excessive oil usage.

Had an old fiat that pistons were shot and it used to randomly blow dipstick out if I revved it too high.

thanks for your contribution im really stuck, its not blowing excessive blue smoke, and i did a oil change, the level at this time is half way up the criss cross area, took out the dip stick no oil coming out just a bit of smoke to be fair as i said before it drives but i don’t want to drive it in case the engine goes altogether

If there isnt any oil coming out of dipstick now and oil level is fine when engine is warm I reckon its ok. Keep an eye for blue grey smoke from exhaust which may be a stuck PCV/worn rings. A small amount of smoke from dipstick and oil filler is normal. A constant stream isnt. There should be a very slight vaccum if removing oil filler cap when idling. If it pops off it could be worn rings or bad pcv
