the good old front bumper paint issue

Featured Replies

hi, i took my fab vrs into dealership for 40k service two weeks ago and told them to have a look also at the peeling front bumper paint around the joins, (i know its covered here somewhere). said he was going to refer it to Skoda Uk

Ok i says, and wait...and wait...and wait:(

so i have been ringing all bloody week to find out if skoda have got in touch with the dealer about it and he keeps saying they havent. how long does this kind of thing take, has anyone had their bumper replace resprayed or anything, just wondering because my 10 year warranty expires in 7.:P

also he said to me...do you wash it with a jet wash? i dont, but even if i did, the paint surely shoud be able to withstand a jetwash and no doubt they are going to try that one on me whenever skoda do bother to get in touch, maybe i should try a bigger dealership than the little backstreet one in Bedford

Took mine in friday, they took photos to send to Skoda UK, and sent me to a VW bodyshop to get a quote for the repair which apparently was going to skoda UK with the photos.

Wasn't given a timeframe as to when I'd hear back. But hoping to sometime during the week. You'd think with the amount of people this has happened to then they would know it's an 'issue'?

I thought the paint warranty was 3 years? and anti-perf was 10? My 3 years is up on October-ish sometime so thought I'd better get it sorted ASAP incase it drags out...

Mines just been to the dealers for this same problem, fixed within 10 days, a bit thanks to Skoda Uk and Telfords of Carlisle:thumbup:

if the warranty is 3 years then they better hurry up too, mine runs out in about october as well but you would think that if you report a problem and they start the warranty process before the warrany runs out then they would continue with it, just my luck they wont though...going to call them about it again tomorrow, when you say fixed was it all reprayed or just the bits that were stripping...dont really know what i`m talking about

they did a full bumper respray

My dealer just had it repsprayed.

They did say they may have to get an assesor out, but they just called and got it in. Took two days and got a courtesy car.

Just got a call from my dealer and the warranty work has been approved. So now I just need to book in with the VW bodyshop.

A lot easier than I thought!

mine was approved within days and got done about 3mths ago - I was told it was a known problem and they'd had another in the week before for the same so shouldn't be any probs with claiming on warranty...

Is this just a vRS issue? Ive not had any probs with the paint on my V reg , just the usual stone chips.

I work in painted exterior trim including bumpers and can confirm the following:-

All paint systems are tested for power wash and jet wash by scoring the surface and the washing with water under pressure at a 5mm distance for several hours.

A similar test is dome by soaking the scored parts in water for upto 600 hours

Similar tests are done using solvents (eg windscreen wash)

There are also stone chip and adhesion tests.

So if any dealer says it is through use of something like a jet wash then tell them where to go.

Flaking paint like this sounds like the surface treatment prior to painting (in this instance it is flaming) was not in control and this is a manufacturing problem,

thanks johhnyh, can always rely on you guys on here to have something to back up reality compared to the dazy world that skoda seem to live in sometimes

Has anyone got any pics of this as the top of my bumper looks as if its already been done or has been in an accident and replaced. More proof pointing towards a replacment was the fact i found some masking tape stuck to the underside of the bumper.

Is there a separate paint warranty, that lasts 3 years? If so, is this irrespective of mileage? Or is it included in the usual 3yr/60k 'general' warranty?

Theres one in another thread, but as it's a Black Magic car it's not so obvious. I'll take a pic of my bumper tonight before I take it to be sprayed (will get one after too). As it's red it shows the black plastic up rather well.

I believe the paint warranty is a separate 3yr warranty? Not sure if it's mileage capped though? Doubt they could say this particular problem is related to mileage use though.

Apologies for the state of the car, needs a wash, but here's my bumper:

Couple more here showing that it's effectively in both 'corners' of the front bumper:

First attempt at posting pics on here so hope this works. Took these this morning of my bumper. Not quite as obvious as yours but I think it can only get worse.

What do you think?

Definitely looks like the same thing. Worth getting a dealer to look at it. Mine started like that, didn't think too much of it until it started getting worse.

Just spoke to Robert Bamfords (Local Dealer) and they said they were not aware of any problem with the paint but said i could take it into them tomorrow and let them do an inspection. Didnt sound too helpful to be honest. Think this could be just the beginning.

then just try a different dealer, i wonder if you contacted skoda uk direct they would do anything other than just say go to a dealer, maybe they could get out an independant surveyer...i dunno

Surely you can just tell your dealer to send photographs and a quote to Skoda UK? Thats all my dealer did and waited to hear back. Surely as long as Skoda UK agree to the warranty work (which they obviously have done with other people) then the dealer wouldn't care - they get paid for any work.

My bumper is being sprayed by the VW bodyshop. Perhaps you could even go to them and get them to contact Skoda UK?

have got the same on my VRS (RED August 2004 car) about the same state as Mort's in the picture. I`m coming up to my 40k service so will get my dealer to check it out then.

my concern is whether a re-spray will necessarily sort it out long term, is it going to be as bad in another 2-3 years and then be out of warrenty?

plan to keep the car for a couple more years.... since i cant come up with anything better to own!

Just got back from the dealers. Said that it was most likely caused by the primer not being put on properly in the factory and thus the paint hasnt bonded properly so by having it done there is no reason why it should happen again.

Said they would contact Skoda UK to confirm and let me know what will be done but they did say it was a fair complaint so things are looking good.

Best of luck to anyone else with the same problem. Will keep you updated on how things go in this thread.

The there is problem with adhesion then painting over the top won't make any difference, if they paint ain't stuck then putting more paint on waon't make it stick....

Ment to say they would either give me a whole new bumper or get it stripped down and re-done from stratch. I wont accept a single respray as what you said is correct.
