All Volkswagen PD Engines can use Bio Diesel and it is officially supported/warranted IIRC

IIRC........Only 5% mixture

Yep "biodiesel" is defined as a 5% biodiesel/95% mineral diesel blend. Some members (Bryand) have played with changing the ratio's and a search should turn up their findings :D

Chris

5% is warranted, although you should have no problems using upto 40% in this weather (Will need to be reduced in the winter)

You will need to change you filter every 10k though as I have just found out ;)

This thread gives the official Skoda response. Unless it's been built since June 2006, it looks like a Fabia vRS is cleared for biodiesel mixed in any proportion with conventional (mineral) diesel, provided:

The fuel conforms to EN14214 and

The fuel filter is drained and changed twice as often as the standard servicing regime.

From cars built from June 2006 onwards, 5% is the max concentration (a retrograde step, IMHO).

There are two feedstocks for the biodiesel used in the UK: rapeseed oil produces Rapeseed Methyl Ester (RME) which is what VW have tested the engines with; and Waste Vegetable Oil Methyl Ester (WVOME) which is what a lot of the smaller biodiesel operations are producing. I've used both, and prefer the RME stuff but there isn't much difference in practice. WVOME is usually cheaper.

The photo shows today's chemistry experiment: 2 litre transparent lemonade bottles filled with: BP Ultimate diesel (left, and which is fluorescent green and slightly cloudier than the RME biodiesel!); a mix of 50% Ultimate and 50% WVO biodiesel (centre, where the Ultimate can be seen to be rising to the surface over time); and a mix of 50% Ultimate and 50% RME biodiesel on the right, which hasn't seperated out.

Hope that helps. I'll have some bio at the Bury BBQ if anyone wants to try some.
