Brake upgrade this weekend

Featured Replies

I am going to do the 312mm brake conversion to my Octy this weekend:thumbup:

It looks fairly straightforward and i have all the tools ready to go.

Is there anything outof the ordinary i should know??

Is it ok to push the piston thing back with a g-clamp?

Is there anything i need to wath out for re- the ABS system??

Thanks

G clamp is fine, take a little fluid out of the reservoir first if its close tot he top, saves it spilling everywhere.

No worries with regards to ABS as long as you keep the fluid topped up when bleeding them out.

Excellent, thanls for that:thumbup:

Just hope it is a dry day on Saturday now:O

Do the calipers need changing? Is it only the 4x4 where the calipers are the same as the TT jobs? Could save you a job.

it will be dry if you're doing them in the garage

Wont need to change the calipers, just assuming you would be bleeding the brakes out when giving them an overhaul such as this.

I'll be doing the same change myself, next week hopefully assuming GolfTurbo gets my money soon. Just checking my understanding.

I know that i don't need to change the calipers, but I have got the calipers, carriers and disks off someone on here.

And the calipers and carriers are green:thumbup:

Got a clamp to clamp the hoses so hopefully i wont lose too much fluid either.

Will i notice a big difference with the 312's??????

is clamping the brake lines a good idea? could that not damage them?

No one as told me otherwise. I bought a tool to do the job with now.:(

A tip for you.

Dont clamp the lines. Remove the old caliper but leave it connected. Fit you new caliper on and bolt it all up. Then disconnect the line from the old caliper and just swap it over quicky. Now the really good bit. Open up the bleed nipple and leave it for a few seconds until fluid starts to drip out. It has now effectively bled itself out. Now you want to bleed it out as normal just to make sure all the air is out.

That sounds like a top tip to me, cheers Lummox

So what about after they are fitted??? Do i need to bed everything in??

Will i notice much improvement?

Dont do it........... Fit my Brembo`s instead:rolleyes:

Fitting is a piece of cake, just follow Ross`s advice you will be amazed how easy it is to change them

Is this a worthwhile upgrade then? Is this the brake kit from the TT? Which model?

What size are the standard size vRS disks?

Does the upgrade require a rear disk upgrade? If not, wouldn't it affect the brake bias?

Would the brake fluid reservoir need changing?

Are OEM upgrades the way to go instead of 3rd party Brembos a la the Cupra R?

What would this kind of upgrade be likely to cost?

Apologies for the rush of questions, but I'm new to vRS ownership and interested in upgrades to stopping and suspension before simply increasing the boost.

1)this kit is from any TT i believe.

2)312mm, the man has a 4x4 which 288mm discs.

3)no and no

4)no

5)this is cheap as it can use the standard calipers and lines but juse use different carrieres and discs. the cupra R brakes are 323mm and 4pot, quite good brakes.

6)not a lot really

Looks like i may be postponing til sunday now due to the weather:(

I have a garage but it is not big enough to get the car in and work on it:mad:

Just one more quick question.

do i need to torque back up when i fit the new bits? If so it would be great if someone could provide me with the torque settings for the relevent bits:thumbup:

Which vRS do you have?

octavia :)

312mm, the man has a 4x4 which 288mm discs.

Are the same size discs are standard fit on the Octy I vRS?

I know what a caliper, pad and disc (I'm 50/50 on the right end of a spanner) is, but lines, carriers, and 4-pots, I don't really understand?

Does the extra inch diametre (and 1 1/2" extra on the Cupra R) make a noticeable difference, or is it more of an aesthetic and theortical (as far as road use goes) kind of mod?

Cheers, apologies again for the n00b questions. :)

Which vRS do you have?
Octavia :)

Indeed (Mk I), how did you know that?

/EDIT While I'm asking questions: Do the Octy MkII vRS 18's fit the MKI? I used to have Eagle F1's on my old car, and can't get them in the stock size, but they're available in 225/40/R18 conveniently. I quite like the old RS4 alloys, really like the MkII Octy vRS alloys, and positively luuuuurve the new RS4 alloys.

This leads to a couple of other questions: What's the tyre of choice (I'm all for paying extra for proper rubber) for the Octavia Mk I vRS in both stock and 'other' sizes?

the carrier is what goes betwwen the caliper and the hub assembly, not all cars have them but ours do :) basically on the 312mm brakes you have a thicker carrier to push the caliper further out :)

i don't think mk2 wheels fit at all as they are a different PCD.

i have eagle F1's on my 17" octavia mk1 they are 225/45/17 i think :)

certainly felt good round silverstone today :)

Oooh, tyre calulators suggest that wouldn't require speedo re-calibration, but surely you need wider wheels to pull that off? What wheels are you running?

certainly felt good round silverstone today :)

 /me is jealous. Any worries about trashing brakes, tyres, clutches on these days? Do you mind if I ask how much?

no worries about trashing anything mate, drive it like you hired it :D

but i think i need to replace my brake fluid after a single 20min session :D

at silverstone today it was trax and you could book track time in small sessions at a cost of £25 a go for 20 mins round the full GP circuit :) excellent fun.

get yourself along to trax next year and meet a load of other members, talk a load ofrubbish, take the pi$$ out of J and probably eat some burgers :)

forgot to say what wheels i have, i have VW santa monica wheels from the mk4 golf gti anniversary edition that are the same width and diameter as standard vRS 17" i think :)

these are the ones.

20082005004.jpg

but to fit these over the brembo's i had to use 12mm spacers.

Sounds like a plan' date=' what's the deal with insurance on these days?

What is trax incidentally? And who is J?

I feel like I've just walked in to a new pub, trying to get to know the locals... hehe

/EDIT Nice wheels, and brakes, are they from the Cupra R? What do you drive?[/quote']

Trax was a big modified car event at Silverstone. You'll find lots of photos and reports in other parts of this site.

J is "Jason" - a regular user of this site who drives a mongrel Fabia non-VRS diesel-lpg hybrid tractor (he's from Devon ;))
