Shell Helix Diesel Ultra - Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

I was in a main dealer (no names) and asked to see the oil they use as top-up/service. It was Helix Diesel Ultra 5/40 505.00 Seems Shell garages all happily stock this but the 505.01 spec oil is as rare as rocking horse doo-dah.

The best thing you can do is buy a guaranteed 505.01 oil for top-up (there is a thread on the recommended ones) and check with your dealer/garage when it comes to service time.

Skoda has a deal with Shell (stated on their website) to use their lubricants but it does seem odd that as a consumer you can't actually buy them.

Have you tried to buy from a dealer?? they should sell it if they use it. Also the 505.01 spec oil is not the product list if i can remember from the days i used to work for shell !!! I would say that you'll be better off looking for a stated 505.01 oil then hunting down a shell bottled one..... shell is good, but not the only good oil out there :D

Q

I put some castrol edge in today. £36 for 4 litres  it is 505.01 rated and says specifically for VW PD engines :thumbup

It was purchased from Halfords, the guy behind the counter tried to seell me halfords own oil. I wanted a branded one!:) Had some real problems finding what I wanted.

Castrol SLX is OK for my Fabia Vrs. 507.00 Exceeds 505.

Thanks everybody

Just changed mine for Carlube PD Synthetic, meets VW 505 01 £24.99 for 5 litres

Castrol SLX is OK for my Fabia Vrs. 507.00 Exceeds 505.

Thanks everybody

Hi Andy

It may well exceed 505.00, but if it does not meet 505.01, or specifically state "sutiable for unit injector engines" or similar, I would not run it.

Chris

I really don't understand why people don't use the specified oil  Skoda say you must use an oil that meets VW505.1:confused: , this stuff is easilly availible from your skoda dealer, VW dealer, SEAT dealers and Halfords to name a few......

Probably because when you get your fab and you see the sticker under the bonnet

you tend to pop into the shell garage and buy the ultra oil with ringing endorsment from the monkey behind the till

But that sticker doesn;t even tell you what type of oil, just the brand! You still need to look in the handbook so you know what you need to buy!

Motoring experts? I call it having common sense and being able to read! :P

Can anybody tell me what these VW codes actually mean. I asked my dealer to use Synthetic oil when it was serviced (thinking this would help my engine and reduce wear) and they used Castrol SLX. 504 00, 507 00. The handbook recommend 505 01, 505 00. Though for flexible servicing VW 506 01, 506 00. I assume 507 is better than 505 and 506?

What do these numbers mean? Why can something as simple oil cause so many problems?

Forgot to say it's a Fabia Vrs Diesel.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,

Castrol SLX 3 is what they have used which is a fully synthetic 5w/30 oil.

507.** and 504.** is the next generation oil to be used in VAG engines which are fitted with particulate filters and so on which the old spec oil causes harm to, this new oil now supercedes most of the previous generation oils so the older engines can use this type of oil as well but not the 505.01. It might be worth you checking with Castrol.

I topped up a 2.0 TDI Octy II with Mobil 1 5-50w rally oil, I was suured by a taxi driver that it was the right one? have I just screwed up?

Hi Gilesk,

5w/50 is not the right oil bud,

the octavia II's should be using the 5w/30 longlife oil,

either Shell Helix Ultra VX from skoda or Castrol SLX 3 from VW

GSF sell Quantum PD which is 505.01. I always thought quantum is what VW put in their engines. Theres Quantum longlife as well which is 506.01 I think.

My local Skoda dealer uses this oil.

Is it safe to use Shell Helix Diesel Ultra 5W-40 VW 505.00 oil in my Fabia VRS ? The sticker under the bonnet says: "SkodaAuto recommends Shell Helix" - but I thought the correct grade of oil for PD engines was VW 505.01

Can anyone advise please?

Shell Helix Diesel Plus VA is the 505.01 oil that shell do or you can use any other brand that meets the 505.01 spec.

I have managed to get Shell PD oil in one litre bottles but only at the dealer.

The dealers is the only place I have ever seen it too. I currently run the Motul 505.01 specific and it seems to be just as good at less than

My dealer had Quantum, which is the VAG own brand (so probably Shell really).

Either way, the oil on this engine is rather critical and I'd only stick 505.01 compatible stuff in.

Not sure where the quantum stuff originates. It has a smell of its own, like gear oil with its EP additives. I have not smelt any other 505.01 that has the same nose.

It does have a sweet smell to it doesn't it, don't know what it tastes like though.

The consequeces to not using a 505.01 approved oil are quite bad, it takes sometimes upto 150000 miles to manifest itself into a breakdown/running problem.

The lifters get dished which rounds the edges of the camshaft, also the camshaft wears it's lobes away, not good.

Expensive repair in either case

Only use an oil which is 505.01 approved and not an oil which "meets" the requirements of 505.01.

The latter is a point well worth making and noting. :)
