Weight difference between 5spd and 6spd gearbox

Featured Replies

I'm looking to get a new coilover suspension setup for my 4x4, however I'm torn between getting a setup designed for a standard 4x4 or getting front struts for a TT.

The front of my car has an FMIC instead of a SMIC so weight will be added there.

Single mass Aluminium flywheel which will be a weight saving.

Different engine internals, turbo, manifold and DP, negligable weight change I would guess.

TT 6spd gearbox instead of standard 5spd which will be a weight increase.

The main bit of information I'm after is the weight difference between the 5spd and 6spd gearboxes. Can anyone tell me?

Have a chat with your local haulage companies, they will know someone with a weigh bridge, for a few folding you can get the definative answer to the lot, your Recarros are probably heavier than std etc etc, you could debate it all day & try to calc it yourself & never be sure of the definative, someone with the clever kit could even give you axle weights

To add KW's are preetty good !!

The 6 speeds are good as well arent they !!, now where do I get a new gear ****(it wont allow kerknob)

Id say a TT front set up would be ideal..

its not like there is more weight at the front of the car than a TT :)

Thanks for the tip.

I hear people say KW's are good but also hear of quite a few failed damper inserts on KW setups and replacements are very expensive.

So you got the 6spd sorted then! Yes they're very good. 6spd gearknobs from VW golfs will fit or you could use a gearknob from a Octy 130PD assuming they're 6spd. I've personally gone for an R-line **** which I also had in 5spd guise.

Variant 3s are KW own inserts and last up to 50k, with track use. V2 are Koni inserts, can't remember who does the V1 inserts.

Stuart is right about the local weigh bridge, IIRC I suggested that in one of your previous posts :D

I had a front fail after about a year, KW sorted it FOC & as it was over 12000 miles replaced both. Ive had both V2 & V3. IMO the V3 are worth the extra

Had the 6 speed fitted & its def a nicer box & "hopefully" I wont break this one. Your Tuner quoted me but unfortunately they were a lot more expensive than someone else, still its in now, only the respray to go & the projects finally finished. Not sure whether to stick with the Silver pearl or go for another colour. The spray shop want to use a burnt orange similar to the Focus St but with a pearl in it. They are about to spray a customised Astra van in that colour so if it looks OK on a van I might just do it

Struat I saw your car a couple of weeks ago ;)

I'm glad you managed to get the 6spd sorted out as I know you wanted it the 1st time you tried!

I wonder where ;) ;)

So do I stick with the same colour ??

IMHO, the pretty-boy pink tint you have at the moment is infinitely preferable to the pillow biter orange you are considering.

How about the flip green/purple?

The current paint actually has Green & Purple in it although the green is very subtle, If we use a black base rather than silver it would be crazy aparently

Keeping the same colour saves painting all the door shuts etc but aparently thats not a lot of work Im told & the doors & tailgate can easily be removed from the car, cards stripped & the insides painted, its only the Engine bay that would have to stay silver.

I'm going for a H&R coilover setup. They've recommended going with a standard kit but have said if I find the front end is bouncy they will swap the springs.
