OK, you'll have to excusre the noob type question, but this is only my second car with a turbo in 18! (the first being a Shogun 2.8TD so disnae really count :lol:).

Just how audible should the turbo 'whistle' (for want of a better description) be?

When I have my drivers window down, and I get in the rev range for turbo spool, I can quite clearly hear it start to 'swwwwwwww' as it spools up.

With the windows closed, I can't really hear it as much, but can hear a noticeable "ptssh" when backing off - even with a recirculating dump valve!

Just wondered as the car is going in for it's engineers inspection tomorrow so wanted to check if I should mention it or will they just laugh at me for stating the obvious!

Also, when hot, if you blip the throttle slightly, does the exhaust sound a little 'farty' or do I have the beginnings of a blow? No other symptoms when driving apart from the odd rattle when trying to take off with too few revs.

Sounds just like mine, which I've had for 6 months with no problems (2003 '03) Just makes you want to drive with the window down, which given the climate control is something I thought I wouldn't be doing

Mine seems VERY quiet! With the window down, I can just about hear a 'sssssss' at about the 1500 rpm mark. And very occasionally I catch a suggestion of 'pffft' when backing off...

I have a derv but swimbo thinks i am nuts lowering the windows for a decent tunnel or anywhere you can hear the turbo spooling up.

I hear it too, especially when I am accelerating(great sound)!After putting a full exhaust and an air filter I think the sound is absolutely perfect!

I only actually heard the sound of mine the other day after reading this thread and driving with the front windows down - all I can say is YEE HAA!!! .

I really wish it had a noisy dump valve on it sometimes for the boys toys factor but I'm sure I'd get fed up of it eventually

Does make a lovely whoosing sound though that's quite nice at 3000rpm.
