H7 halogen--> H7 xenon, DONT DO IT

Featured Replies

Having read this thread and then scrabbled around in front of a new golf headlight looking for the little silver bulb covers, does anyone know if they are part of the bulb, part of the headlight unit or a separate bit that slips over the bulb? They do look really cool with the VW printed on them!

Part of the headlight.

I'm surprised you thought the 6000K bulbs were too blue - I had them before and you would struggle to notice the blue! Also, natural (white) daylight is rated at 5500-6000K.

I agree. The 6000k bulbs that came with my kit seem fine, subtle hint of blue that's all perfect colour match with the LED sidelights.

As far as glare goes, on a number 1 setting there is no significant glare. Tried walking around in front of the car and I had to get very low before being dazzled.... err .... blinded :D It passed it

Hi

Simple answer is that the Fabia standard headlight is not suitable for HID conversion unless you can make and attatch suitable bulb shields. Dont know if the projector unit will be suitable for UK roads (Right hand drive).

Oh and if buing a kit off EBay, avoid Xenon Lights Direct. The guy sent me stuff that was not as ordered and 17 day delivery when advertised as 1-2 day del then stung me for postage. Total rubbish service.

That looks just horrible.... i mean the amount of glare that your fabia has :thumbdwn:

Those new projectors should help a bit... maybe

I know I will sell them

If you got high temperature paint, try painting the lower part of the D2S bulb.

You could try making a shield to fit under the bulb instead but that would have to be good enough to take the heat and dark enough to not add to the problems.

I wish I had read this post before buying :( :( :(

The DoT has officially come out and said they ARE illegal.

Check the official link.............

Department for

Transport - Aftermarket HID (Xenon) headlamps

My Fabia didnt have the xenons extra when bought new, and i cant live without xenons, so i just went down old Halfords and the Super Brilliance Xenons bulbs were half price. Even when not half price they are

The only place i would consider buying aftermarket Xenon's from is HIDS4U.co.uk as they are guaranteed to work in the car you put them in. They have developed them under extensive testing and are the best ones. My mate put them in his Fiesta ST and they are fantastic.

Im gonna order some for my Octy vRS when i can talk SWMBO into letting me pay

makes you wonder how they can continue selling the conversion kits of the DoT have deemed them illegal...

Easy, just sell them for off road/show use only.

But you'd have to state that when advertising them for sale wouldn't you and I was looking at a conversion kit just now that certainly doesn't state that!

The website says they are an easy conversion and can be done in less than an hour. No mention of legality. I've sent my kit back (luckily I didn't use it at all before reading this).

Contacted the company and they strongly defend the fact they ARE LEGAL. But, the kits are clearly not with the glare pictures from earlier, the fact the DoT states they need auto-levelers not to mention the simple fact they are in H7 fittings which they shouldn't be.

Got a set of extra-bright (road-legal) Halogens from PowerBulbs and they are very bright so all is not lost :)

Rules are made for bending

Not for retro-fit they don't, nor the requirement for headlamp washers. For a factory fit, yes, but not for DIY.

I don't think this is the case any longer.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

Chris

Looks like the DOT has finally made its mind up. I have no doubt that in some applications, the use of after market HID bulbs is fine and if implementation and alignment are OK and the driver remembers to adjust the level control when loaded with passengers and luggage, all will be well.

However, you see some real clowns about and this is no doubt why the DOT has made the decision. Round our way, we have a Lexus with purple headlamps. They put out so little useful light that following it, I could clearly see my beam edges in the field illuminated by his.

Anyone fitting any of these kits to a headlamp without some sort of glare shield (like the Fabia as a good example) will create unpleasant and potentially dangerous glare for other motorists.

Lastly, because of the way the bulbs are designed (or hacked from a DS2) the wire shadow may in some cases actually result in less light where it should be than with standard halogen bulbs.

If you have a Fabia and want better light, I suggest Osram Silverstars or the Philips X-treme Vision +80% bulbs.

Chris

Nicely put.

From previous experience, I've witnessed two sets of the Philips bulbs die after only a few months use. I'm using the Osram ones and would recommend them.

First time I have tried the Philips X-Tremes, very impressed with them, don't know how long they will last.

I had Silverstars in the Fabia for 30,000 miles, then they both went within a couple of thousand miles of each other. Worth it IMO.
