H7 halogen--> H7 xenon, DONT DO IT

Featured Replies

I made this mistake my self, ordered H7 6000K HID kit for my fabia...

Beam pattern looks okay... but the is so much glare, you will make everyone blind with those lights.. at least if you plan to use them in dipped beam.

These look okay...

I ordered some yesterday!

Got Factory fitted Xenons in my current Fabia and wouldn't be without them so ordered some aftermarket ones for my new Fabia as it doesn't have them fitted!

Hope they will be OK and they are so much better than halogen bulbs

was just about to buy a set for my new octavia after looking at them on ebay, are all pics on dipped beam?, would the 4300k oem be the better choice? ta.

All photos are dipped beam. 4300K is even more bright so it will glare even more!

Here are some pics how should a good xenon light look like, no glare!

How many other road uses heap lamps are out?

I like the look of the results and would say that if other road users can't perceive the difference between 'bright light' and 'crisp light' then stuff em!

The lamp beam looks low enough to me.

On my current car (53 Ibiza) I got under the bonnet and manually adjuted these little white cogs to get an ultra low beam, are these on the Fabia and can you fiddle with them instead of changing the kit?

mmmmmm proper xenon is still the best way to go, no cheap imitations (no disrespect to anyone like).

The beam is acceptable but the glare that they are producing isn`t.

If you lower the beam then those lights aren`t going to help you at all.. do you think that its cool to have 5 metres long bright spot in front of the car?

I adjusted lights so that they would point almost in front of the car and they were still way too bright for incoming traffic.

If u put HID kit in to fabias original headlamps, its going to look like u are driving with mainbeam all the time. And you are going to see birds and all other animals from top of the trees because of the huge amount of glare that is going to light up the sky

ps. u can`t compare fabia to ibiza, headlamps are totally different. All i am saying that H7 HID kit will make fabia look like you`re driving with mainbeam all the time.

There is a reason why fabia has its own headlamps for xenons! HID kits are crap without proper headlamps.

my mate has an ebay HID kit on his calibra and works perfectly, maybe its just eh fabia thats crap?

Right,

I have a calibra at the moment, with HID's fitted. The reason they go straight in Calibra's with no problems at all is because the standard headlights are projector (or prism) type. They are designed to collect all the light the bulb emitts and project it forward in the desired (correct) beam pattern.

Normal halogen headlights rely on the reflectors at the back of the headlight to reflect the light into the desired beam pattern. Any light travelling forward out of the bulb is not being reflected and will not follow the pattern, so when you look at a halogen bulb closely you will see the front of it is coated in some kind of black ceramic paint to prevent this.

HID bulbs are not like this and throw light forward as well as all other directions. This is what you see as glare from HID's fitted to standard refector type headlights if you dont fit something to prevent the light travelling forward straight out of the bulb.

Manufacturers have addressed this problem with little silver thingys that are mounted in the headlights just infront of the bulbs, you may have seen them on new astras golfs etc (i noticed the golfs in particular because they have tiny little VW badges on the front of them! cool!!).

SO, if you want to fit HID's to standard refector type headlights you need to find a way of copying what VW and Vauxhall have done with the little silver thingys....

OR buy some new fabia headlight units with projectors (or prisms) in £££££££.....

Lastly, i have 6000k bulbs in my calibra and think they're too blue. Given the choice again i would go for 4700k bulbs as they are as close to natural daylight as you can get.

I read on a site called HI DO's and Dont's that blue light tires you eyes quicker so will have a detremantal effect on your vision whlist driving at night!!!! It's something to do with the frequency of the light waves and the photons they emit... blah, blah, blah.......

That Escort you have is ..... Well ... seriously COOL :thumbup:

You can just see what i'm on about in this picture on the right hand light.....

Squint harder and you can see that cool VW badge......

Here's the astra one too. Again you have to squint to see the little silver thingy but it's deffo there....

I'm surprised you thought the 6000K bulbs were too blue - I had them before and you would struggle to notice the blue! Also, natural (white) daylight is rated at 5500-6000K.

Maybe it's just the way it shows up on road signs and stuff. It just seems too stark and it's the blue tinge i've noticed so thats why i'm blaming it. The light they emit seems almost clinical, like it was made in a lab or something!!!!

Don't get me wrong though, i think they're fantastic compared to standard halogens. They do pick out road signs much better & sooner and i use full beam much, much less now because of them.

Maybe i'm whining about nothing......

4300K bulb has almost 30% more lumens then 6000K bulb, that is why 4300K is better, almost white light and best visibility. And IMO 6000K is too blue..

An alternative for Non-Xenon lamps, I can recommend H7 Osram Silverstar and H3 Osram All Season for perfect lighting!

Yellowish illumination, but working well on rainy days!

or just 130W lamps instead :D

or just 130W lamps instead :D

Then, my tiny 1.2 Fabia's headlight plastics begin to melt down, fog lamps too

well stick to 100/110 then, they won't melt at that wattage ;)

Thanks, would be worth trying!

I can confirm that the lenses don't melt on the Fabia when using 100W main beam bulbs (off road of course, officer ;)) for long periods of time :D

Chris

neither do the octavia or focus light units. according to my mate :D

Or the Mk3 Mondeo (according to me friend) :D

Chris

Or Octavia ones with xenons, so my friend tells me :D

The HIDs you bought, have they got a blanked out portion of the bulb or are they clear all the way around. I ask because for OEM HIDs, D2R is meant for reflecor housings and D2S is meant for projector housings. The D2R has a blanked out portion of the bulb to reduce glare. Also might be worth playing with shields under the bulb to prevent glare. Also, also, how good are your headlight glass?

2006 car, glass is perfect, H7 D2S bulbs :) I believe that all HID-kits come with D2S bulbs... (not sure of course but all photos that i have seen have been with D2S bulbs.)

Those could work with D2R but still there might be too much glare because normal halogens have it too, with D2R it would probably be just 2 times worse.
