Strange thing on new BMWs

Featured Replies

What is that strange fin like object on the roof at the back of the new model BMWs?

I always thought that BMWs were very solid classy looking cars but these new ones are awthful. They look more like something Proton or Hyundi would come up with.

It's the aerial I believe, William. I'm sure you can buy them from most of the usual "Performance" car sites/shops (if you want one that is?)

Andy

I think the fin is a combined radio/GSM antenna.

New one definately look "different". It appears BMW Chief Designer Chris Bangle has even had some influence on the new Williams F1 car.

To think it start so positively with the Fiat Coupe.

Yeah, I'll second that... :)

Rob.

I thought it was a GPS areal for sat-nav :really:

Don't new Saabs have them as well?

Me too.

I thought the aerial was in the glass.

M8's got a new 5, the radio aerial is in the glass (for non digital versions), and the fin houses the optional GPS / Dabs / GSM aerials. If you look apparently they are slighlty different sizes dependant on which options you have on the car.

I thought those went out with the Estelle/Rapid and early Favorit sunroofs. (d'you think Skoda own a patent?)

I think i got the answer to this one:P

the fin at the back just above the rear window is the aerial for the SAT NAV.

Friends' dad got a mini cooper S, apparently got the SAT NAV installed in that:S

Not all beemers have them for obvious reasons:P

BMW's have fins cos theyre mostly driven by sharks ;)

Whatever it is, it seems to stop the indicators working.

Whatever it is' date=' it seems to stop the indicators working.

That's always been a standard fit on BMW's :)

Actually, i'd quite like a combined FM / GPS aerial for the Octy... :scratchch

However it does turn the fog lights on whatever the conditions ;)

Phil

Apparently having now changed the face of BMW and after the release of the new 1 series, Chris Bangle will be leaving BMW.
