Octy vRS TDI -v- LEON FR TDI

Featured Replies

I'm shocked! Been studying the standard equipment list for the Leon and can't believe that though the list price is

The Octy is a nice looking car so it has a big advantage over the Leon.

And the Octy has the vRS badge on it, the Leon has FR which doesnt have the same pedigree.

Despite the less than brilliant equipment on the vRS I would still have one instead of a Leon.

I looked at the Leon FR TDi as it was an equal contender as far as price was concerned with the Octy I've ordered. However, despite the extra performance over the 2.0tdi elegance I'm getting, the build quality was pretty poor and the general styling wasn't to my taste.

I disagree with the appearance thing though, I think the new Leon looks very nice in FR guise and lest we not forget, the FR's are the equal to the vRS in terms of performance, it's just that Seat have another level above that. :)

No contest, :P the leon looks 'orrid.

That aint the FR though :P

I know but google isn't helping me out right now. :P

It's still an ugly pig (sorry mate:O )

I like the look of the Leon from the front, but once you get side on have to say looks a bit MPV.

I also think the interior could have been better done. That said I like the look of the new Leon Cupra - alot - not sure what price / spec that will be when it comes out, subject to price could be a vRS beater.

Just used the comparison feature on the Skoda web-site and this is what it comes up with.....

Your Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI PD vRS 5dr hatchback '07 has the following advantages over the SEAT Leon 2.0 TDI FR 5dr hatchback '07:

Exterior

0.5 in wider wheel rims

Bodyside protective moulding

Rear spoiler

Rear mud flaps

Interior

Cigarette lighter

Audio player Disc Autochanger

6 disc autochanger capacity

Rear ashtray

Weights

221 lb greater total weight

100kg greater total weight

Performance

4 mph higher top speed

4.9 mpg more efficient extra urban fuel economy

0.4 l/100km more efficient extra urban fuel economy

1.6 mpg more efficient combined fuel economy

0.2 l/100km more efficient fuel economy on a combined cycle

4.0 g/km lower carbon dioxide level

Tank

7 l greater fuel tank capacity

Exterior Dimensions

249 mm longer

1 mm wider

106 mm lower

Interior Dimensions

71 mm more hip room in rear

219 l greater load area, seats up

Doesn't look like they come up with much of interest, and not sure what the advantages of 100kg extra weight are!

Yes but it is 1mm wider :wow:

None ****e plastics on the dash and not having the stupidly wide pillars and the quater window on the door.

What were they thinking when they did that !!:o

Haven't driven the vRS TDI but tried the Leon FR TDI before buying my vRS petrol.....

what put me off the Leon..

The ride..... Awful, and I mean ridiculously hard,.... my petrol VRS is miles better... don't know about the VRS TDI

The interior.... feels claustrophobic in the leon, back or front and the boot's a lot smaller

and very few ex-dem Leon FR TDI's about (when I was looking a few weeks ago) which meant £6k to change to the Leon or £4k to change to my ex dem O6 plate 3000 mile vrs with Maxi, Zenons, Jumbo and 18's in metalic black - no brainer for me;)

This will go down like a lead balloon.........

IMHO the Leon FR is a cracking looking car, much more cutting edge than the conservative and boring looking Octavia.:P

Don't know about the build quality though, seems many seem to think this is where Seats fall behind the rest of VAG.

Rear mud flaps

Rear flaps on the 07 vRS??

I asked the dealer about rear flaps the other week and was told there are no plans to make them......unless its a home bodge special. (unless the 07 model has a different bumper?.....)

Come on Skoda, how sodding difficult is it to make a set of rear flaps for the Octy II vRS??:thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:

(the reason for the wee rant there, is the underside of my rear bumper is starting to look like is has a problem with acne. not obvious, but if you run your hand over it........not a happy bunny with that...)

I like to look of the Leon FR as TDI says it is much more cutting edge in the style department, but if it's for full on Family use the Octy vRS TDI gets my vote.

IF I was going to buy either one it would come down to the deals available at the time.

Just my 2p's worth.

Must admit the main advantage I can see with the Octy is purely size / boot space. Im still amazed that Skoda decided to effectively reduce the spec of the Octy MkII spec against the Mk1 (climate / windows etc)

maybe the leon isnt selling as well as the octavia mk2 and they need to get buyers on board?

they will surely adjust prices to suit the market

I imagine if the octavia sales drop off would see a price cut.. they have priced the octavia at a level they think it will sell...same for the leon

They are such different cars though. The Leon will appeal to young buyers who want something with a bit of style and a bit of poke. The Octy to family buyers or people with an eye for quality... ;)

The Leon will appeal to people with perfectly flat roads to drive it on...

It was bouncing all over the place on the M5 at 70 - 90 when I tested it,...

Shame really as it looks pretty good in black.

Anyone got any loose fillings they want shaking out

not sure what the advantages of 100kg extra weight are!

Means in a collision the VRS does more damage. :mischief:

I'm younger and i really don't like the look of the Leon FR.

The doors are hideous as i said with the quarter windows, they are just trying too hard. A bit like the civic, it just doesn't do it for me.

You'll get away with the Std Flaps for the vRS, see post 6 here :)http://www.briskoda.net/forums/new-octavia/vrs-mud-flaps/61694/?highlight=flaps

So the VRS one is take mud flaps, fit, apply hair dryer.

So the VRS one is take mud flaps, fit, apply hair dryer.

A couple of guys have used a bucket of hot water but I found by the time you put then on they have cooled. So I put them on see the top left pic, the used some lidl special clamps ;) then heated and let cool. Result top right picture.

On one (the drivers side, which is shown in the top right on the picture) I tried to trim some of the plastic away to get them to sit better but the hairdryer was a way better idea.

This (FR TDI vs VRS TDI) I'm something I'm mulling over at present.

Question though - the VRS has a "3 spoke sport steering wheel". Is this a multi-function jobbie for stereo control?

If you go for Maxidot, is this controlled via a stalk or steering wheel?

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, I am (relatively) young and I have had a Leon FR TDI since beginning of September. The ride certainly won't shake any fillings out, but then I don't have any to shake out, and if I did I would be able to replace them (I'm a dentist!)

I think its a great car. I seriously considered an Octavia VRs, as I had a Toledo with massive boot previously, but it was just too expensive against the Leon. And has previously been commented on, the standard spec is too mean. The Leon ride is certainly firm, but I've had no probs with comfort on long journeys, and I've done 500 miles/week since I had it. It goes like the proverbial off a shovel and even sounds good (for a diesel)!

I'm not anti-Octavia though. My wife has an L+K estate 2.0TDi on order, collecting on Monday. I agree the interior plastics on the doors and upper dash in the Leon are s**** quality compared with the Octavia. However, I can confirm after 3000+ miles there are no rattles or squeeks and it all seems well screwed together. It seems that Seat have now fallen into the role of 'budget' VAG brand, with Skoda filling the middle ground between them and VW. I really do think Skoda need to revise their standard specs however, for instance ESP should really be standard fit on a
