Featured Replies

My m8 has one (16v) and blimey its quick!

Anyone else got one? Driven one?

It must be cos its sos light but it sure does fly...

My Mum bouht a 216 GSi new and then was diagnosed with a brain tumour the next day (she is still around 15 yrs later bugging me) and handed it over to me, and that shifted, got through a lot of tyres though.

aye the k-unit 16v are fairly quick but it will suffer HGF at some stage!

The 1.6 is nippy with 130bhp (I think)

Is it faster than a Fabia 2.0l though ;) :P

Had a 214 for 7 1/2 years (back then I thought 95 bhp was massive! The 216 twin cam had 130 bhp, the sohc 1.6 honda unit was something like 116 bhp, and drank like a 3 litre!). First new car and no regrets, finally went with 96k on the clock. Then had the next style '200' with a 1.6 for another 7 years before the Furby was born. Gave great service and enjoyed an extra zoom of life when Shell Optimax came along!

My previous car was a 214si, and it went very nicely. A bit floppy round corners but quite perky.

We had one where I work...it ate clutches but thats cos there were several bad drivers and it must have blown about five head gaskets....A complete pile of crap

I had a 216 16v with the Honda unit. Nice car but the seats were made of cardboard.

I drove the 214 (rover engine 105bhp) and the 216 (honda engine 130 bhp) and both were good.... I liked those cars, for the alternatives at the time (ford escort ect) they were the best ! :) if you manage to get hold of one of the 220GSI or 220 coupe's with the turbo engine they fly! (205 bhp) very, very frigile that old 'o' series engine tho.....

i think all the 216's had the honda d16a unit didn't they???? they are 125bhp and it is a good strong engine

the 220 and 220 turbo is a t series engine....... the old o series engine is what they put in meastros and montegos...

Yup, I remember the early 214 being the quickest of the small engined cars in the early 90s.

A 1.3 Escort was nowhere near! The 1.3 Astra could be quick though, if you got a good one.

A mate had a 216GTI TC which had, I think, the same engine as a CRX. That was a fast car, with a redline above 7300rpm. It's wishbone suspension meant that the body rolled all over the place. We had a good laugh razzing it through Kielder Forest Scenic Drive (at 25mph, of course)

There was a single and a twin cam version of the Honda 1.6 fitted to the 216 IIRC. The 2.0 was a Rover engine.

yes that's right, but they were both 16v tho.... the single cam ones had a kind of double rocker system which operates two valves at the same time..

Ahh the old 220 Turbo Targa top :D

me mate had one... well two actually, his 2nd turned out to be a jap import that had other "tweeks" - it was fecking rapid... remember bumping into an early scooby-owners meet and completely obliterating them (only in a straight line tho)

corners and slowing down was scary... as it had the same brakes and suspension as the 1.6 model
