Oil Changes

Featured Replies

This weeks Autoexpress has a test of various 'hand-pump' type oil change devices. Has anyone used one on a Fabia or have any experience of them? Or maybe "the traditional way" is best?

Thoughts appreciated.

I would never use one, the dipped pipe might not rest on the bottom of the sump, leaving old oil in the system, even worse the left oil will have the most bits in it. I believe its use ,and electrical pump driven versions ,are to allow garages to do the job quicker ,and make more profit!!

I agree, I have one which I have used to remove half a litre here or there so I can add an additive (engine flush) but would never use it to do a full change.

I have been using one for years, it's a brilliant piece of kit. Some engines you do have to be careful about reaching the bottom of the sump though for instance a Vauxhall 2.0 8v.

Othere than that it will save you time and money especially if you don't have to remove large pieces of black plastic to get at the sump...

Thanks for the information. A mixed bag of opinions there so I guess it's down to;

i) personal preference

ii) ease of access to underside of car (damn that undertray!)

iii) do I want to toil in the rain or just get out and enjoy the car?

Another advantage of the pump is that you can suck out the residual oil from the oil filter holder after removing the filter which is not that easy without a pump and is often just left. :D

Also, do you really get ALL the oil out when actually removing the sump plug

I think not!!

The Pela 6000 etc should do the job and save crawling under the car

Hi

The Pela 6000 will fit the Fabia vRS dipstick, but it won't fit a 1999 Polo 1.4 8v, I've just had to resort to the traditional crawling under the car method on my son's Polo

... but it will not fit a Fabia 1.2 12v dipstick - recently borrowed a Pela 6000 and no way would it go down.

I'm interested in finding this item 'Pela 6000'. All the websites on the internet refer to American places and prices.

Approxmiately how much would it cost to buy one, and ... where from?

Thanks

Aaron

Thanks mate...

i'm sorry, but untill I feel the cancerous goodness of old engine oil on my fairysoft hands, then i dont think an oil service has been done.

elec/handheld pumps are useful if you overfill by accident, but that can be avoided by filling to 3/4 then running the engine for a min or two to fill the pump and filter, then topping up as required.

Hi,

Check out boat chandlery shops, I was after a Pella for sometime but found an identical system in a boat shop. They have them as you can't get the oil out of boat engines any other way. Can't remember what mine is called but it takes 6 litres and cost about

When I used to do my own oil changes I used to run a full sump of HGV Turbo oil (much higher spec than car oil) through it as engine flush then fill up from scratch - always good results. Running the engine warm and draining normally (new filter obviously) seemed to work - why would you use a pump?
