Tried this with my wheels today...

Featured Replies

Well, with my spare set anyway. They came out a bit darker that they supposed to, but the can did say Anthracite. Not sure...

I think they are a little too dark :(

Personally I think the shade looks ace, spot on.

I think they look good:thumbup:

should have said, I had one that was damaged refurbed and powder coated in anthracite to see what it was like, Its now my spare :)

I could have took a pic for you to save you painting

that looks excellent, what did you use?

also what was involved in painting them prep wise?

I like it...

But wouldnt do it as it looks like you are rtying to copy 172/182 cup wheels...

I like 'em, I would like to do something like that with the 18's on my Octy

Come one then Martin, whats the score ?

Think they look spot on mate

It's a love it or hate it look. I am not sure about it myself but the most important thing is that you like it

Maybe would have looked better on a red car? I dunno.

Crikey, what a response!

Start with very clean wheels (These wheels were as new) and wipe them down with thinners (Care not to get on the tyres!) I then used two coats of Simonez Wheel Steel paint to give it a base (Leave over night). The colour is CarPlan No.4 Anthracite, this usually takes about two coats to get nice even finish (Again leave overnight to go off). You can at this point use a bit of 1200 to flat it off if you think it needs it. I didn't. It's a lot of work and if you are good with the laquer then you don't need it.

Here is the tricky part, the laquer. I used standard Halfords clear laquer which to be frank is 5hit3. 3 coats and it's got a sheen but not a great one. I would recommend Upol laquer which is what will have to happen next as I realise I need to apply a few more coats

Sounds like alot of hard work, I bung me mate £100 and they are shot blasted, primed, painted and tyres refitted and balanced.

But your do look very good.

Bob on them mate  They look very similar to mine, the effect is a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it :P

Look alright. I'm planning to get mine powder coated but in a slightly lighter shade.

Just need to get the TT Comps refurbed & get new tyres fitted first!

Look great - a touch lighter would be my taste, but not by much. And, as you say, a few more coats of laquer as they look a bit too matt at the moment.

Good job though - I woudn't have the patience, or indeed skill, to undertake that :)

Steve

I think they look good, and if you kerb them you will be

in a good position to repair them.

They looks exactly like mine. Only difference being that I have standard vrs wheels and all I did to get them like that was not wash them.

they look mean

Think they look brilliant mate!!!

I like the look of it, love black wheels on a black car everytime!
