tapping noise!

Featured Replies

In the last few mornings i've noticed a tapping noise when i turn on the heating in the vRS.

It usually fades after a while but its kinda annoying, any clues guys?

Had similar last week, told it was normal for climatronic! Would like to know what it was however as "normal" covers allsorts!

Mine also makes some pretty weird noises which I would like to know more about.

I may or may not have read a TSB about certain noises from Climatronic units, but it seems to be regarding slightly different symptoms.

Had a tapping from what sounded like an area behind the glovebox only the other day, stopped when the heater was up to temp, never heard it before, but i usually have music on.

Regular, rhythmic tapping or the noise of 2 different types of plastic expanding and contracting at different rates? (what I get when I first turn on AC).

I have the same tapping noise on my vRS, so i quess its normal as others have it to

No not the expansion creek, but a regular rhythmic noise.

Yes I have this. It's really annoying. I swear it's getting louder on mine. I don't think it did it when I bought the car in January. Tends to be between 2 and 5 quite loud taps. Especially pull up in traffic or at the lights or whatever when it's still cold.

I was told it was to do with the motor flaps turning, but to me its sounds like they are trying to go too far if ya get me.

Could the noise be the vents adjusting to keep the vehicle at the dialled in temp on the climatronic unit?

Well I don't have clima-do-dad in my 2.0 TDi but after a while from setting off from cold it sounds like somebody's impersonating a horse with a pair of coconut halves when the hot air blower's on :)

It usually happens just as the oil temp. gauge hits is middle point and 'clip clops' for a while afterwards.

That tapping noise is the climate control flap motoring to position, or still motoring after it has reached its position. Mine does the same thing but keeps motoring after it has reached its setting. The dealer can reset the flap positions by electronic wizardry. Mine had a problem in the past that had been cured by this method and was fine until they had to remove the dash to cure an annoying buzz. Another visit to the dealer required, getting to know the technicians by name now !!!

My last two cars (VW Golf and Passat) both had the same Climatronic as my Octavia. Both made the same tapping noise as the Octavia.

My 1.9TDi Elegance has done it from new, pretty well every trip when engine cold. Usually one or twice in the first 3miles - particularly noticeable if crawling along in rush-hour traffic.

Mines going in next week to have the climate control adjusted to stop that tapping. Also, I got bored today and dismantled my dash to go after a rattle from the glov ebox area. Removed the whole glove box bit, which is held on by 6 screws. Three of these are along the front edge accesible with the glove box door open. The metal clip that the middle of the three screws goes into wasn't where it should have been, it was rattling about in the latching mechanism. One down, about five more to nail.... New one started this week from around the head unit. The one in the headlining will hopefully get done next week by the dealer. Then I've got to strip the doors. Joy.

Mines been sorted at the service yesterday, no more tapping !!! All flap positions have been reset as one was found to be driving all the time when it didn't have to.

Just collected mine. They haven't even looked at the climate control tapping thing. :(

Mine was in for 10k service today. They put a newer version of software on the Climate Eprom to change the settings for the motors.

The car was spotted alright!
