vRS fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Just got 55mpg for a good blat up the M5 at a cruise controlled 90.... Off on to the A46 and blatting it between roundabouts and along the M69 to Leics.

Very happy with the economy, especially given the power I have on tap. :)

My trip computer was reporting 42mpg for my first weekend of ownership. Needless to say, I wasn't exactly hanging about! :) This morning on my run to work, I got a combined 57mpg! (50% small roads/housing/industrial estates 50% motorway) I fill each time and calculate my mpg so it should be interesting to get a real world figure.
Filled up the tank today....39.8mpg real world figure....hoping to see a noticable improvement this week as I've been drivin very carefully

Below 40 mpg is very poor and a figure I've not got close to in 25,000 miles.

I'm averaging just over 50mpg (calculated).

The trip computer on average reads 2 mpg higher than reality.

So when it was reading 73.7mpg on a trip from Bath to Gloucester last week (45 miles) I was doing quite well - in fact I've never seen better... :) :) :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Did another 2 fills and got 46.27 and 46.55mpg. On a recent 200 mile run, I averaged 50.5mpg(as per computer) sitting at 75mph.

I see silly numbers on my trip computer but mostly brim and reset the trip B so I can calculate how well I'm doing.

It's EXTREMELY rare I see less than 50 even if I've been childish. In the same car SWMBO rarely sees as high as 45 driving like a girl. Apart from an experiment on Ultimate (which did result in an improvement in performance over a benchmarked course) it's always been run on supermarket fuel.

FWIW the car was broken in as per the manual and never uses any oil.

Basically some people can't drive economically, some can. Stop blaming the car and stop calling the manufacturer a liar - the fault lies with the driver.

:iagree:

Just like some people can drive safely at speed, and other scare the carp out of you at 30mph.

Use this method: -

1. Fill car to top (When the cut out happens on the pump)

2. Reset Trip Odometer

3. Drive like normal

4. Repeat Step 1

5. Calculate - mpg = Miles/litres x 4.54609

6. Repeat above steps to gain average over time.

Is this all really necessary ?

The Fabia Vrs does 50 odd to the gallon. That's good enough isn't it ;)

I think the whole my car does xMPG oh thats much better than petrol mpg. Well not exactly if the fuel cost the same then yes it would.

So the true calculation is brim the tankrun it until you next fill up and then work out the pence per mile. This is the only way you can compare Diesel vs petrol and different diesel brands against each other.

For comparisons my 20V Turbo Fiat Coupe is in the range of

If you believe the trip computer maybe.....i've yet to exceed 47mpg(calculated) even though I average over 50mpg going to work(as per trip computer). Granted I've only had the car 3 weeks so we'll see how things improve.

I would class myself as a very economical driver (at least going to work that is :)).....I don't coast, I look far ahead and try to keep the car in gear by holding back rather than stopping and starting, don't labour the engine etc etc

If you want to improve and maintaint fuel efficiency, ignore the 40k air filter changes set by skoda and change the things every 10k miles. My car is happier like this and gets more MPG, plus the old filter the one and only time i left it for it's service interval was filthy.

Little tip if you remove your air filter you can hoover it clean and re use it - should save you £7 for a new filter + be more environmentally friendly.

You're right, it beats the 27MPG from the vectra i've traded in!!

I recently got my Fabia vRS back from a recent overhaul and I'm pretty sure the fuel economy's a lot less than I used to get a couple of months ago.

I'm driving with economy in mind, but not really conservatively. Changing gear about 2.5k, etc so not pushing it.

Average mpg on the computer says under 40mpg on urban driving. Before the rebuild I was driving on slightly longer journeys, but would that really have taken the mpg into the high 40's I used to enjoy?

On a full tank using the "stop when the pump clicks" method (40-odd litres), I get a range of 350 miles showing.

Anything to be concerned about?

That's pretty bad alright....I've covered 90miles so far this week and the range on my computer when I arrived to work this morning was still 450miles!

My mpg(calculated) for the past few weeks has been 39.05, 46.27, 46.55, 43.55, 44.33. I was expecting better to be honest.

Are you letting it get really warmed up (20 minutes +)? Low 40's would be about right for a cold stop/start car, whereas a hot motorway cruise should yield mid 50s.

I did notice a drop in my mpg recently, which I put down to a dodgy fill (condensation in the diesel with the weather turning cold & wet, perhaps) A refill from a different garage sorted that one out.

My drive consists of approx 10miles through other roads/industrial estates/housing estates and then a 10mile motoryway run (maybe averaging 50mph with the horrible traffic)

Every morning my trip reads between 50-55mpg over the journey so yeh the car does get warmed up. The 20miles typically takes me 40mins to complete.

Maybe that's it - my journey's 10 minutes at best. Looks like I'll need to do a few runs over the w/e to see how it compares.

Disagree, it is a well known fact that manufactures results are inaccurate, as a general rule of thumb you need to take 15% of the top of thier figures to get an accurate 'Every day normal driving' figure. What Car did a report on how the figures are calculated and tricks used to give false readings. If you where to drive slow and accelerate 0-62 in 1.5mins to 2 mins, and never go above 60mph then you may just get thier results. So I will have to repeat my statement that they lie, and trip computers are just as bad as liers as the manufacturers.

There is however the flip side to the coin, if people drive aggressively fast ' Compared to normal' then there economy will be alot worse (Thats a given) but if you read all responses here they will confirm my allegations.

When i get my scanner I will post the scan of the report done by What Car magazine.

Not really, if you look at the post the average is approximately 46mpg (that is less then 52.3mpg claimed by manufacturer that is a 12% drop which falls inline with the general rule of thumb above :D

2. Go in and ask when the last delivery was, and if there is a good amount of diesel/petrol in the tank supplying the pump you are on.
Considering most petrol pump attendants (in Ireland at least) are foreign, it's very unlikely they'll know what you're asking. :D Otherwise really enjoyed reading your post....your a realist like myself...I don't believe in over exaggerating the figures....my Fabia has yet to exceed 47mpg (calculated & driving like a nun to work, be that in quite heavy traffic at times too though)....

I rather be honest then say things that eventually I can not back up (then look like a fool as it were) As you know i have a 1.4TDi and average MPG at the moment is... well as below. Out of town 62.4mpg in town 52.1mpg. However i am the size of a small country and at 24 stone I weigh the blighter down. I will be dieting from Jan 1st 2007 and hope to see an improvement of the mpg (Mainly interested in seeing how much differance weight makes on economy :D)

I am glad you like the post, as you say I am a realist and I am also one of those people who say what i think, after all I rather make sure people know where I stand with them and what I believe. I would also like to say I am not afraid to say i was wrong. If indeed i am wrong in anything i post here :D

I will be working on a my site over the chrimbo holiday, which will have a skoda dedicated section there. I also will be trying to get better info on economy figures rolling on that site, then expand to other makes :D But that will be for another post I think :D

Ok I am ranting it is 02:45hrs and I just got in from work and the screen is starting to go blurry so I bid you all good night and hope you all have a good day :D

who cares what mpg you get because when it is empty it needs refilling what should we do if we have only got 35mpg that tank push it the last 150 miles

Not all of us are made of money mate!!!!:P

I managed 254 miles out of my tank last fill up.

But normaly around 400 - 500. I find my computer more accurate now i have 17", as the speed now only reads 2mph out. According to my GPS devices

Same route over the last 4 years, different cars. 60 mile each way commute, 10 miles on A/B roads, 50 miles on the M1. Speed whatever traffic will allow. All measured brim to brim over total of 95k miles:

Audi A2 1.4 Tdi (as per Fabia engine) - AMD remap at 11kmiles 99hp, 188Lbft. Average 57.61mpg over 51k miles. No trip computer.

Audi TT 225 - stock. Average 32.12mpg over 31k miles. Trip computer 12% over.

Fabia VRS - Jabba remap at 4.5k miles 185hp, 297lbft. Average 47.95 over 13.5k miles. Trip computer 21% over (58mpg).

I have to say the VRS figure is the most disappointing because the computer is so inaccurate. Despite the remaps I don't get much chance to hoof it around and would describe my driving as economic. The trip computer said just the same before and after remapping so that hasn't changed anything. The best tank was 53mpg and the worst about 43. It's still loads better than the TT!

The manufacturers' claimed figures are based on EU specified lab tests so not worth the paper they're printed on. Skoda doesn't lie, they just reprint what they're obliged to calculate. Maybe car makers can fiddle it with gear ratios chosen to help the reference speeds in the tests (like they do for noise regs) but I doubt it.

Drove back on the same route today in hideous rain. Average speed 48mph. Fuel consumption 75.0mpg. According to the computer that is...

Though it is a EU Directive on the way the economy is worked out, it is not tested independantly !! The testing is done by the manufacturers themself in accordance with the directives set by the EU directive. As with all things the rules can be interpreted in ways which will allow manfacturers to give false / misleading reports to their own figures. If their lawers are smart enough to find all possible loop holes in the directive. One manufacterer seems to have good 'Lawyers' as they have a worst rep on their figures (For legal reasons I will not name and shame them.... but ya know who I mean ;) )

I am hoping to build a website on cars and have real world figures pouring in from the general population. But I have to find the time to build it first :D

Sorry I am a geek, I hope this is informative :D
