I own a Skoda Octavia RS 1.8 L Turbo petrol. In the begining, 7 months after i purchased the car there was thick white smoke from the exhaust of the car. Initially i thought it wasbecause of rains here in INDIA but later i realised that was not the reason and i sent the car for workshop.The Skoda authorised workshop (Mahavir Motors) person kept the car for more than a month and at the end he did not solve the problem.Later to my surprise after i gave a complaint to the main Skoda branch in India they replaced my car's engine with a new one.Two monthe after they changed the engine I am still facing the problem of white smoke from the exhaust and my car isnt performing like RS..and it give a mileage of 6 kmpl in the city even after maintaing 2500rpm..wat do u guys say about this..any such complaints wit anyone of u?

It sounds like a failed head gasket, but why a new engine would exhibit the same symptoms shortly after replacement is a mystery. Without meaning to cause offence, what is the quality of the petrol like out there?

My mileage used to be around 7.3 miles per litre - so nearer 12 kmpl. Different, but not _that_ different, especially if your car is mainly used for short trips in the city. Does the white smoke persist if you take the car on a long run?

you should probably ask lummox, but does the white smoke smell like steam, or like oil? steam means prob head gasket (bad), oil might mean blown turbo.

whatever it is, it's definitely not normal and there's no excuse for the dealer not sorting it out...

i've seen problems with the water jacket splitting through to the exhaust turbine on the water cooled turbochargers before, especially where the car has been driven really hard then not enough time is allowed for cooling before switching off the engine, to be honest the first thing i would check is the cylinder head gasket, then the turbo

the white smoke smells kind of oil..definately not steam..the fuels used are pretty ok..its same as the other octavia users..no one had such complaints..and when the white smoke comes out the car's powers reduces especially at higher rpm

I had a friend with the same problem with an old MR2.

So many people said it was the turbo that had gone.

Also with the loss of power seems to be an indication of this too.

Keep on at the dealer until it's fixed.

Really is sounding like a potential turbo failure then going by what mr Teflon says...

When they replaced the engine, was it the whole thing including turbo or did they reuse the ancillary components. Does sound like turbo to me.

they said they've changed the engine not turbo

bear in mind it'll probably have destroyed your catalytic converter too. get them to sort it. is there a different garage you can take it to? This one doesn't sound very competent...

From what you desribe i'd say turbo.

normally when you order a complete engine from the dealers,they come with engine block, bearings, crank, conrods, pistons, valves, camshaft,oil pump, rocker cover & sump. unless otherwise stated (except pd engines which come with injectors!)

all the other ancilleries such as intake/ exhaust manifolds, brackets , alternators, pumps, flywheel, clutch, etc and not included........

and if you purchase a recon engine from sombody like VEGE Uk, or even a recon from the dealer, they dont include and ancileries, and also they dont have any pulleys or belts too....

the only general exception to all this is when you buy a brand new type 1 or type 2 'old' beetle/bus engine (from vw deakers).... these normally come supplied with everything inclding the alternator and ht leads and they are ready to fit to the car.

I had the blades on the water pump go. the car went into 'limp' mode, and after a mile or two more trying to limp home, white smoke started to come out. Scary. Had a new water pump, but they changed the head gasket and cam belt whilst there. Seems fine now.
