Plastic scuffing sound... from the steering wheel

Featured Replies

I have noticed for about the last 10 days when then turning the steering wheel I can hear some sort of scuffing sound (when at low speed - ie. reversing into driveway, etc.) A little bit like plastic on plastic, but when I had a quick glance around the back of the wheel to see if was catching on the steering column housing it was a long way away. That then made me wonder what else it might be... and I came up with electrical contacts - maybe for the airbag and horn, but I am not sure how these are connected up.

Any ideas?

(I have not checked to see if the horn [or air bag] works!!)

Not much help, but my W Reg Fiesta (which I traded in for my Octy) used to do the same occasionally, and I never got to the bottom of it, but equally it never seemed to cause any harm.

It used to just do it for a small number of days and then go away for months and then suddenly reappear.

we had this on a mark II Golf Gti we had years ago, sorry, cannot remember what was causing it, but I remember we went on hol to isle of wight and it was doing it really loudly in a car park!!!!!!!

Mine does it too. I put it down to the wheel possition sensor thingy but I could be completely wrong!

Could it be a cable tie in the ignition shroud or something similar? Has an aftermarket alarm or anything been installed?

Dunno about the Octy, but my ZX and my dad's VW Type1 both had slip-ring contacts for the airbag and horn press respectively. An Octy might have slip rings for both?

slip rings..... I knew there was a proper word for it. Maybe they need a light application of some lubrication?

No aftermarket alarm....
