Installing non-factory head unit

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am now the proud owner of a brand new Fabia VRS (my first diesel car), I am planning to replace the head unit with a shiny new Kenwood or Alpine, however I do have a few questions.

1.) I purchased a surround adaptor from Skoda (

Weclcome to Briskoda.

Not sure about the surround, but i thought all cars nowadays had a standard ISO connector installed.

Thanks for the reply mluton, the question aboud the leads is really a concern about CAN-bus usage not necessarily the actual shape of the connector to the head unit. The problem goes like this;

A lot of modern vehicles now use a CAN-Bus connection to relay data to and from different sensors and pieces of equipment and the ECU, modern factory fitted OEM head units utilise this method of information transfer for various things eg.. to increase sound levels dependent on road speed, volume control on telephone equipment and various SAT NAV functions. Many after-market head units eg Kenwood, Alpine, JVC etc... do not use these functions. However if you connect one of these after-market head units to the vehicle and the ECU is looking for the information from the head unit major problems can occur.

If anyone has any clarifications and solutions it would be greatly appreciated.:thumbup:

Thanks for the reply S41NT, yes you are spot on about the aerial adaptor, the reason you need one is because the Skoda symphony head unit has a built in aerial amplifier which after-market head units dont have. The ISO converter lead which I bought from Blue Spot Audio has one of these integrated into it.

Anyone have any ideas about whether the VRS uses a CAN-Bus or not?

Thanks in advance

Fabia vRS and Octy 1 vRS don't use CAN-bus; Octy 2 vRS almost certainly does.

As long as you use the adaptor cable then nothing to worry about.

Sorry, just to clear things up, do i need the aerial adaptor or not :confused:

It depends on what your new stereo comes with. If it has a female aerial input than you will need an adaptor to make the right angled aerial in the Fabia longer, to fit inside the stereo... If on the other hand you new stereo comes fitted with a male aerial input than no, just plug and go. :thumbup:

Sound! (no pun intended!!)
