Nail cost me

Featured Replies

1 flat tyre, 1 attempted repair which blew out thanks to me doing 130 :o (km/h ;)) and then a can of tyre weld doing sweet F.A and as a result of limping home, one knackered toyo t1-s. Just ordered a pair of t1-Rs in 215/40 R17 for

215=mm width of tyre so yes 10mm ;)

But i must admit i find the 215's feel slightly more planted than the 205's but it may be the change in manufacturer too

Out here, if you take a tyre with a nail in it in for repair, they use a T-handled reamer to push through a sticky rubber wick, trim the excess with a regular knife and inflate it - all done.

Can't one get the reamer and wicks privately? Those, plus a 12v minicompressor and a sharp blade to trim the wick would be pretty cheap IMHO. Instant DIY repair shop in your car boot.

(Sorry to hear about the tyres Jason - at least you're turning a bad thing into yet another upgrade!)

Cheers

Bas

Was the repair carried out by a tyre dealer? I've never had any problems with repairs and I know Mannyo did quite a few laps round the ring with a repaired tyre too!

Maybe if you can prove it was a poor repair, you can get them to share some of the cost ;)

The plot thickens.......

You try proving it now he has used tyreweld.

The tyre repair was done for free by a mate, who didn't want to put the alloy on his tyre remover as it was a bit old and was likely to scratch the wheel. The repair was done from the outside, which is less permanent.... so perhaps I shouldn't have been doing 130 (km/h ;)) which is what sent it over the edge. Not nice coming off a sliproad with that sinking "what's that noise, and why is my steering pulling left?" feeling. ;)

Actually, to be honest, I've lost a little bit of faith in T1-S, and having only about 2mm of tread to the marker, it's not a bad time to be swapping to the T1-R in a wider size, which will hopefully give me better front end grip, for good acceleration. T1-R is also supposed to "weeeee" all over the T1-S, so I guess I just need to wait for the rears to go (or puncture  ) and get the Rs on there.

Anyone know THE way to use tyreweld, because it was very disappointing to have the can I've been carrying round with me do absolutely nothing when it was actually needed.

I used some on another car a week ago -

shake the can, make sure the tire valve is at the 5 or 7 oclock position.

attach, fill up the tire, drive off to spread the goo.

When repairing, tell the shop you used it (gas is flammable!)

they have to fill/empty the tire 10x to vent the gas...

If you go for the slightly wider tyre the wheel diameter will be a tiny bit bigger. As far as I am aware the 215/40/17 are going to increase the size of the wheel by 8mm. Not alot it's true but thought I would share this pointless fact with others as it helps when working out what will fit. The 215 is the width in mm, the 40 is the % of the width that equates to the thickness in mm of the side wall. Sorry for all who are asleep now but it helped me get a set of 17's on an MX5.

Well next time go and spend £15 on having it repaired properly.

Bad luck - enjoy your new tyres :thumbdwn::thumbup:

So, what will 215/40 give me over 205/40? Any extra rubber in contact with the ground? :D

Shouldnt they be 215/35 to maintain the correct rolling radius.

Don't think so as that would be a tyre wall of 75.25 mm as apposed to the 82mm standard. It would be better slightly bigger than smaller I recon.

*cough* tyre calculator, see freedom link up top.

But also since I've just swapped my T1-R's from 1.6ish mm to my old assemtricos at a whopping 1.8mmish, all I can say is, toyo's were a lot more confidence inspiring. But the weather has taken a turn and I can't really expect to go round roundabouts in 2nd and travel in the direction I actually wish to travel can I?

Hi Jason

I`m pretty sure that the can of tyre repair I carried in the boot had a tyre

width limit ....... so not suitable for vRS tyres :(

if you still have the can read the small print

I really must find out which tyres I've got at the front of mine :o
