Fog lights.

Featured Replies

The light switch on my Fabia turns on the Front Fog lights before the rear one. I often want to turn on the rear one in poor viz but I dont want the front ones as they dont enable me to see any further, are no brighter than the headlights and make you look like a **** in the eyes of some people.

Can I reverse the wires in some way so that rear comes on before the fronts ?

In fact I cant think of a time in the last ten years when I've felt the need for front fogs - to my mind they are an ornamental addition and a waste of money. At

No idea. Although, you could always bodge it .. and take out the bulbs. This maybe an MOT failure though, i'm not sure.

i understand you man but dont know how to do it, they only make visabiltiy better two feet closer to the car but they look alright tho when all on

Fog lights are very good when used properly... When in thick fog you turn off your headlights and use only the front foglights... They spread the beam to the sides and not forward... Have you never experienced trying to drive in fog with headlights on? The headlight beam reflects back off the fog making it very difficult to see... The fog lights have a much shorter reach so they don't reflect the fog...

They really are more than just a cosmetic feature !

Yes of course I've driven in thick fog:) - Learnt to drive in Yorkshire in the days when coal was still used lots - couldnt see white lines in the middle of the road from the kerb ! & got lost in roundabouts because you couldnt tell how found round you had gone:eek: . I just feel that front fog lights dont contribute anything really useful to improve safety; no better than dipped headlights (abit less reflected light maybe but it makes no odds)- still cant see any further ahead- cant safely drive any faster - so why bother. However they seem to give some people a false sense of security ; You know the type - front fogs on but still drive at usual speed when they havent a cats in hell chance stopping in time.

if you don't need the front fogs on then you will not need the rear ones on as visibility is not bad enough for the rears the switch is set up like that to stop Muppet's driving around constantly with the rear fogs on dazzling drivers behind them  i cannot remember the last time i needed my rear fogs on but when i do i always turn them off when someone is following

The front fogs are not to light the road further ahead, the beam pattern is such that they light immediatly in front of the car and the roadside immediatly to the left/right of the car. you cant see any further anyway, Try switching on main beam in fog, thats what happens if you try and see further ahead, you end up seeing nothing.

I do agree though that in the headlights they are useless, the octy 2 ones are much better.

It is a poor design 'feature' in not having independant front and rear fog lights.

As for rewiring - it's probably possible, but it'll probably void your warranty... ;)

None of the cars I have owned recently have independent front / rear fogs. I think its a legal thing. Basically if its bad enough for the rears to be needed then the fronts must be on. The cars I have driven with this config, BMW 3 series, 5 series, Merc C class, Porsche Boxster, Ford Mondeo MK1 and MK2. The others didnt have front fogs.

Without getting to technical or into legal stuff the questions re Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations can be found at the following link

Just type in your question...

For once the Police have developed a useful site

Charles is spot on. I always thought front fog lights were pointless until I ended up in Oxfordshire during the 6 months of fog that seems to happen there each year. The front fogs were the only things that allowed me to see where the ditches were at the side of the country lanes.

The law says:

"The use of front and rear fog lights is only to be used in cases of seriously reduced visibility. Using fog lights when the visibility is not seriously reduced can dazzle and cause discomfort to other road users. There seems to be an absurd trend at the moment for drivers to have their fog lights on regardless of the conditions and the time of day. This can be dangerous to other road users and is an offence, which could mean you are liable for a substantial fine."

Give em points as well....Danno!!

Dead right, Sadly Seat Ibiza and Citroen Saxo drivers are unable to turn theirs off for some reason.

I was always led to believe you only use front or rear fog lights if you cannot see over 100 metres in front of you?..sorry a little off topic

You are right re the 100m that is what is considered as seriously reduced visibility.

IIRC the idea behind the fog light switch sequence was to stop idiots using their rear fogs as "motorway driving lights".

Unfortunately the powers that be forgot about the idiots who think it is cool to drive with front fogs on all the time.

I have lost count of the number of drivers I have done for misuse ..... and way off topic the red washer jet LED's as well!!!!
