Losing the Plot

Featured Replies

Sorry guys, this is my forum winge.

I follow every thread, and maybe it is the number of users that we have now, or not, but I feel as a founder member that the members online are not quite following the questions asked are going off in ther own little inner circle tangent, and I ask all members as a favour to myself and others, if a question is asked and can be answered then do so. If you want to bitch to each other then there is the live shoutbox to do this. If this continues people with genuine questions will be put off and extinguish their membership. That is not the purpose of this web site, we aim to encourage new members with geniune interests in the Skoda group. I thank all for their cooperation and knowledge. Lets keep this web site live and kicking and not forget what we are all here for.

Well Said Sir.

:mexwave:

It is something we have been aware of for a while, was talking to one user the other day that said they did not use the site as much as they used to due to those arguments.

I think a lot of it is the 4x4\RS thing, which for me is just good banter (not serious) but some people (including regulars!) let it get serious, and hence outsiders will just see anger and petty arguing.

We should be rejoicing that Skoda provide not only a single performance model, but with tuning, a choice! Subaru, Mitsubishi, and so many others offer a single pinnacle of their skills, whereas we can choose performance in whatever flavour we desire!

Even if friendly and well intended, lets keep the insults to a minimum and keep that userlist growing! (271 now, gulp!)

:bup:

I must say I am really REALLY confused. :? :? :? :?

Yes things do have to change, personal insults are not acceptable, I agree but what is a personal insult? I would like to use Ian's last post to point something out, I would say before continuing that I am not having a go at Ian in any way as he has posted in all innocence.

Being an ex Subaru owner, I would find that quite annoying to say the least and a personal attack against my pride and joy. The Subaru *impreza* comes in many forms from a run about to a nutter turbo with tuning applications that are endless. This could be compared with the 4X4/RS debate, for want of a better word. Feelings run high when pride is bantered in this manner, therefore do we scrutinize ever word we post in innocence. I hope Ian does not post an explanation because there is "nothing" to explain.

Yes we have got a good forum here with freedom of speech and balance, I just hope it doesn't go top heavy.

Still confused :? Des

ok, not an explanation, but a clarification.. :)

Whilst there are tons of "uber" impreza's (UK turbo, WRX, STI's, P1's, 22B, etc etc) they all run the same drivetrain \layout (ok, RA's etc use the controllable diff) and a similar driving experience.

I was not having a go at the impreza (nearly bought one or a forester) but that not many manufacturer's have a 4wd soft-roader and a 2wd sports model based on the same model \ shell, it shows a sense of variety, not to mention the luxury of an L&K or any other 1.8T, if you want 200bhp in an octavia you have plenty of choice.

Point missed, it's not about the car but how you perceive the post, thats the point.

Err......Impreza 1.6 - 2.0 unblown variants, soft suspension

So far i must admit its all been a bit of a laugh!

I would'nt say its a closed shop.

Obviously any new people will be a bit shy, but i dont think any of the chat on here has become regulars ONLY!

I first posted on bouncing checz? and someone on Vortex told me to try out there. I did and haven't look back since.

Once i realized you had all moved here i came across.

So i understand your point 66' but id be the first to p*ss off it if i thought it had become regulars only / closed shop/ techies.

P.S On a lighter note, Am i the only one here who uses a SPELL CHECKER!! b4 posting!!

:stupid:

Steve's remarks make sense to me. Every forum should be able to cope with some friendly rivalry. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed my short stay here and found the welcome very warm, by both RS and 4x4 owners  - thank you for that.

I must say I had quite a laugh when I discovered the British RS vs. 4x4 debate - I gather that with my future car I'll be right in the middle :D

But I agree with 66/100 that you wouldn't want [i:802a572b6b]your[/i:802a572b6b] thread to go off on a tangent. But I guess everyone's taken notice now...

 ....OH YES

How about a grammar checker as well? <ducks>

only kidding - at least you're postt waz spelt write

It's been a few days since this issue cropped up but I'm going to throw my hat into the ring, so here goes...

The problems with this format over the spoken word are many. Points raised with an emphasis on humour can be completely mis-read by other members. Leave off some smileys and you've got somebodys back up. I learnt this the hard way back on Vortex, one of my very first posts referred to parking sensors (ie if you need them you shouldn't be driving). I should have made it plain I was joking but I didn't and I had to eat a large slice of humble pie. A misunderstanding happened again on Briskoda when someones response to my post was 'B******S', I thought he meant my suggestion to try Chipsaway, he was referring to the '******s' who had scratched a members car.

I understand '66's frustration that his post went way off topic but what I find to be amusing rivalry between Denis and Des doesn't indicate a 'cliquey' tone in Briskoda. It's a very young site and many members who post regularly are the original founding members. Some have even got together at meets and this cheery rivalry is bound to happen. Look at the ribbing TaviaRS got for ripping off his sump guard, I wasn't there but thoroughly enjoyed the banter that ensued. And TaviaRS took it all on the chin with, I would guess, a red face, but in the spirit in which it was meant.

As far as the 'enforcers' are concerned, I've already mentioned that Briskoda is a very young site and this means that membership is growing rapidly. What was originally seen as a place where the members of Vortex could have a get together is now one of [u:adb447d298]the[/u:adb447d298] sites for people who own a much underrated brand of vehicle. You are not going to be able to keep everything as small scale as the Skoda section of Vortex. Yes, the site should be closely monitored for anything offensive or inflammatory but you also have to realise when to just sit back and let it run it's course. One disgruntled ex-member (whoever they may be) doesn't indicate that the forum has gone bad. To be honest, I'm glad to see the back of one or two, but then again one or two would be glad to see the back of me. That's just the way it is. What shouldn't be lost is that over all Briskoda is a very friendly site that encourages humour and welcomes new members whether they've come over to the 'dark side' or not.

I think '66' is being over sensitive, fair enough his post was hijacked but there is no 'club' within Briskoda. It's a laugh, a bit of fun, nothing more. I'm pround to be a member of Briskoda and to drive a car that turns heads but I could live without the 'Founding Member' tag. And apart from anything else, the posts haven't been that much fun since this issue cropped up.

So endeth the rant. I've named names. Be gentle with me. :D

i,m a member of a number of satelite related boards(in excess of 12000 members on some) & this problem of "elitism" has reared it,s head on many occations. maybe a sticky at the top of each section pointing out this is first & formost a friendly board welcoming all from big to zero posters. some debates get out of hand so a mod steps in & closes thread, end of arguement. as for digressing from original question ,i,m sure this happens on all boards & a gentle reminder now & again would solve this. i also think a successful boards needs it,s jokers, technical know-alls, general chat & out &out beginners to continue to grow . this board has answered many probs & questions i have had & long may it continue.

best regds ect :D:D

Rich, You are right in what you say, it's just these recent months when there has been quite a few new members joining and asking questions that have already been covered, rather than point them in the right direction a personal dialogue starts up, and totally ignores the original question. I am not slagging anyone is particular, it is just something that has happened.

Yes you are right this is a fun site for everybody that loves, and is proud of their car, and I think it should stay like that. There is a number of the guys on site who enjoy the occasional meet, and have had a great time and a good laugh, and believe it or not, I am included in that number, but please don't forget why we are really here, TO HELP FELLOW SKODA OWNERS.

Thank you for you time, I now bow out of the winge.

And if anyone else tells me that I have a sensitive side, I will rip their thrapple out.

:D

So we're all friends again.....

Time for a group demonstration of togetherness to celebrate! :mexwave:

Denis,

With the greatest respect, if you think I'm having a group hug with anyone who used to walk sideways... no thanks![img:6a9d073ab7]http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/laugh.gif[/img:6a9d073ab7]

Rich,

Nail on the head in many respects:

but then again one or two would be glad to see the back of me[/quote:6a9d073ab7][img:6a9d073ab7]http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/jump.gif[/img:6a9d073ab7] ;)

66,

I think in some respects you were being a bit oversensitive [img:6a9d073ab7]http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/sloppy.gif[/img:6a9d073ab7]. Yes there is some banter and some threads do get hijacked. Unfortunately, thats life on these boards and we are all guilty at some point. I'm not to worried by it, especially in "The Lounge", but can see how it [i:6a9d073ab7]could[/i:6a9d073ab7] be annoying if you had a question you wanted answered. Please accept my apology for being involved in the hi-jack of [i:6a9d073ab7]that[/i:6a9d073ab7] thread.

:mrgreen::mrgreen:

As for my sump, well stuff happens, live and learn, it was my mistake, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, not too bothered by it though thought it was quite amusing really.

PS Anyone see the rallying at the weekend? Felt kinda sorry for the Peugeot team with one car hitting the other. Good result for the Skoda team. ;)

PPS Yay, won some money with my on-line bets on the result ;)

Whats a thrapple :?

A Scots form of [b:561a843bff]thropple[/b:561a843bff]. :D

[b:a01e90b491]Moderator's comment:[/b:a01e90b491]

OK, 'Didier', this is perpetuating an :off: item and some members may get upset, even though you are held in high esteem by some. Please go back to playing with your Scalectrix/construction set. :D

RE Above

I will get someone else to write this as my english isn't so good

[img:cb16db67d0]http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/notworthy.gif[/img:cb16db67d0] Respect to the moderator

And all the apologies in the world to anyone offended

I may now be perpetuating a point which I interpreted from the above to be closed out.

Maybe [i:cb16db67d0]I[/i:cb16db67d0] am now missing the point. Do conversations not evolve in such a manner?

*To clarify the points made, are we all saying that any post made must be directly relevant to the title of the SUBJECT heading?*

If so, then no problem, all is understood. But does this not potentially stunt the flow of conversation?

Again, my dearest apologies [img:cb16db67d0]http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/stupid.gif[/img:cb16db67d0]

Can I say that this is an excellent resource for Skoda fans. It is run very sensibly and hats off to all involved. Visiting other forums, as I do, I would like to make the comment that, compared to others, we are all a fairly sensible bunch. My comments about the rally, i.e. The final positions of drivers, weather and visibility were all correct and factual and were meant with the best will in the world. I did not intend to open up old wounds from above, that was not my interpretation of how the discussion had gone, if you could answer the starred question above then all may be clear.

Don't worry about it Stathap. We haven't stopped 'group hugging' since the weekend :D

Don't...I'm filling up again...

:bump:

Speaking as a member of only a very few days' standing, I don't think it's necessary to worry too much about off-topic discussions. In general this board is peaceful and self-regulating while still enjoying some humour and banter between members. Too many rules stifle discussion just as much as the occasional off-topic foray into the woods. I certainly haven't been put off by any of the content in this thread or others.

I'm all for keeping things lighthearted, makes it feel like a community of friends rather than a council meeting :P

stathap

I can only answer your question for the forums I moderate, ie those in Community. As a guiding principle we should try to make sure that the poster of a serious question (...unless posted in the Lounge...) has been given the courtesy of having his/her question answered before digressing from the subject. In 66/100's case, he hadn't got such an answer some 28 posts later and was rightly miffed! Of course we can all digress, expound our views on all manner of subjects, answer questions which haven't been asked, and generally amuse and entertain ourselves and others. We just need to do so in moderation, bearing in mind the particular forum we are using, and the sensitivities of others. :D
