intermittent rattling noise

Featured Replies

hi, recently i have been getting a noise like a cv joint gone on my 1.3 1998 felicia. It was mainly on a RH turn and occ on

LH but when i was driving down the motorway i could feel it on the steering as i was driving straight! got AA out could not see anything obvious, tyres are new and cv boots are all in tact. My mechanic said he would have to actually test it when it happens to get to the bottom of the problem, up to now it behaves when im at the mechs! Any suggestions, part nos etc. that would be of help?

Ive also now realised that when you press the clutch down it will stop the rattling completly!

cv boots being intact tells you nothing about the state of the joint inside.

If AA and mechanic have looked at it I doubt its going to be a wheel bearing which would be my next suggestion :(.

Theres a metal shroud behind the disks, might be worth checking that isnt a bit loose or hitting on a wheel weight occaisionally? Also I seem to vaguelly remember having a problem with a certain rim \ weight combination where the weights were knockin on the steering arms.

Worth checking out bushs etc.

may not be of help but sounds similar i had a renault 19 'boo hiss' and i had a similar problem and you could feel it all the way through the steering weel i changed the bearings r and l and i changed both driveshafts and cv joints the problem in the end was a slightly buckled front weel yes yes iam an idiot but it could be that if none of the above

Ive also discovered when you press clutch it stops rattling! Any further suggestions?

Clutch release bearing is a good possibility then.

My 1.3 has the same rattle that disappears when the clutch pedal is pressed, Mr Haynes says that its a 4 spanner job, Im a 1 spanner man (2 if pushed) any guestimates for the cost to replace it? If its a pricey job would it be best to get the friction plate and pressure plate assembly renewed while the mechanic is in there?

went to dealer, front off side cv joint & ball joint replaced, callipers checked and greased all for a mere £178 incl. vodka and tonic! said labour was @ 2.5 hrs.
