is it likely to do any damage?

Featured Replies

after being told my head could do with rebuilding i've been told by a few people that it wouldn't do it any harm and that all it will do is burn a bit of oil and blow a bit of smoke, now which is true or is it neither.

forgot to say apparently my valve stem seals are worn :)

Had you cut them up when they said your head could do with being rearranged - sorry rebuilt.. lol

In all seriousness, go get a 2nd or 3rd opinion from some other garages.

Cheers

it does blow smoke when driven hard but i am wondering wether it will actually do any damage or just burn a bit of oil?

I think the oil consumption will just get worse, I don't think any real damage can be done tbh as long as you keep the oil topped up.

Although its probably not that expensive to do, just bite the bullet fella.

:)

oh i want it done mate not a problem but i don't know if i should be driving the car carefully and as little as possible or just get on with it :)

and its more expensive than you would like :( the head has to come off which means both manifolds and everything bolted to them being removed :(

Like the old Ford CVH problem? Does it blow grey smoke on start up , when the oil that has been dripping past the valve stem oil seals gets burnt? I don't know how true this is but someone (mechanic) once told me that this doesnt do an engine any harm , in fact it could be good for it? Mind you that was regarding an XR3i of 1980s vintage!

No it wont do your engine any harm but it will damage your cat and Lambda sensors eventually in the same way that overfilling with oil does, if you have an expensive aftermarket DP / cat put the std one back on until you get it fixed.

the harder the engine is pressed the mor oil wil get pushed past the seals

you're assuming that he checks the oil level. ever. :nono:

At least on the cvh you could change the seals without removing the head..............

sorry.

For about 5 replys I thought you were talking about your real head! As in the one on your shoulders :o

I was going to suggest this good surgeon I know but seeing as your head isnt actually smoking or burning smoke I dont think it falls into his area of expertese!

I would reccomend immediate head transplant, Benjwaldo. What with the wonders of modern science, and your vast experience you might just pull it off! (and become attractive to ladies at the same time!):D
