Strange Noise

Featured Replies

Car has suddenly developed an odd noise. If I turn left whilst accelerating I get a loutish rumble from the front of the car. Doesn't do it all when turning right, and is hardly noticeable if I'm not accelerating.

Any ideas ?

CV joint perishing ? or wheel bearing ?

Not very helpful but mine did that a year ago. Took the front end apart to find what it was, couldnt find anything, put it back together again and its been fine ever since.

Mine did it on left had bends whilst accelerating and sometimes when changing gear.

People that heard it suggested it could be CV related.

I did think wheel bearing, but it only does it under power. If you are just rolling it doesn't do it.

CV joint is a posability. I know the tracking rod has play in it, and I wonder if the garage has dislodged something when they were examining it. Didn't do it before it went to the garage!

It may be that when you put a bit of left hand lock on your getting one the suspension componets rubbing.

You might be able to check this at the halt by putting the steering at full left lock and yank on each component in turn until you find the one thats able to be pushed up against something else.

Interesting idea, I'll give that a go.

The garage seemed to think it was the heat shield for the brakes rubbing. Seemed OK when I took it out for a quick spin, but it started doing it again on the way home.

Well it transpires it was the passenger side tie rod having play in it

that was causing the tyre to vibrate about.

Thanks for all the sugestions/help

cool, glad they helped

£140 to fix, so it had better work !

grr, still not fixed, so it wasn't the tie rod (it needed doing anyway so its not that bad paying for it!)

Any other sugestions ?

Sounds like the worn CV joint to me:confused: , never had this happen to my Octy but did happen to my old Ford Orion. Kinda ratchity rumbling noise  !!!!!!!!! coming from worn teeth on the cog like end. This only happend in one direction, if i turned the steering the other way it did not happen.

I maybe speakin crap, but in my opinion thats what it is!!!!

My VRs has started doing exactly the same thing! I was told it might be the anti-roll bushings, but upon further investigation this does not appear to be the case. I am having it looked at again tomorrow, so if I find out anything further, I will let you know.

hi new here i am in the process of buying an octavia 1.8T 4x4 and it does the same thing was a major off put however the mechanic said it was common and was normal. i then took my mechanic friend to look at it and he also said they get the car in his garage with the same noise but there is nothing wrong with it (I hope!!!) however it is on the right turns i noticed it (but right hand drive car)

I'd say that is very much *not* the case

Another thing to check is the exhaust by all accounts.

new CV joint and still no better :(

If I cant get it sorted soon its going to wind up in a car supermarket...

well dealer gave me an upgrade to the warrenty so i have the full retail warrenty (the one they give new cars) and the diff and all that is covered so hoping for the best. the last time i took it out for a test drive it wasnt as bad so think in my case it is because the car has been sitting still for so long? pick it up on sat though

You bought this from a Skoda garage ? It may just be the discs having rust on them.

yeah a proper skoda dealer

Whilst I wasn't convinced that it would help with the noise, the only fault on my car was a broken exhaust bracket. I've had the centre silencer replaced (with new brackets), et voila, the annoying noise round left handers has disappeared. I can only assume that going round left handers either resulted in the exhaust being able to move far enough to either rub against something, or touch something, allowing it to resonate, thus producing the annoying rumble. Anyway, the problem now seems to have been resolved, so if your car is still making the noise, it might be an avenue worth exploring.

fixed the problem went into a car park drove round in a circle a few times and the noise slowly dissapeared and hasnt come back

cool!

I'm pretty certain its the exhaust on mine. If you drop the clutch and rev the noise goes up and down with engine speed

All sorted now thanks to Awesome GTi ;-)

It was indeed a loose exhaust

Hurrah!!

my 03 octavia also has the above 'strange noise' around left handers.

i had my car up on ramps at garage and the brackets had correded and came off so they used a metal clamp around the silencer to secure it, ever since i have had the noise.

it must be someting resonating/vibrating .

how much was the new centre pipe?

They just welded a new bracket on mine and all was fine.
