Help - WSUS problem

Featured Replies

Have a problem with WSUS and its starting to frustrate the users, especially as we are adding more workstations to the WSUS server.

Basically whats happening is, the pc's are installing the updates at midday and then prompting the users to restart their pc's. I have managed to get rid of the 5 minute countdown on the second restart now/later prompt but this is not enough, as if the user clicks restart later they keep getting pestered till they do.

What I have tried to configure is not having the pc's install the updates at all, but to just install them at shutdown. This removes the need for the prompt in the first place, but I cant seem to get that to work. Can someone who knows advise me where in the GPO I need to set this setting, that would be a great help. Also what setting to change to stop the reboot prompt.

Manny..

Having been in a similar boat myself i know that the GPO options aint really that flexible on various things.. eg i wanted updates to be installed on shutdown.. but the best it can do is to defaultly select the "install updates and shut down" prompt and not enforcing it, causing calls to the servicedesk or people just ignoring it.

dont know if you know of this site: PatchAholic its a WSUS blog. has some useful bits and bobs on there..

If you set the "No auto-restart for scheduled installation" to enabled people will be asked if they want to reboot now but it won't be forced on them.

You can then set the "re-prompt for restart with scheduled installation" to a very large value so that people only get asked once.

That should remove the annoyance

Alex, I'll try your settings. Have updated the GPO this evening. I have also changed a setting for the way downloads are handled from "Download and install automatically" to "Download and prompt user". That may stop the restart prompt alltogether.
