Renaultsport Megane any thoughts

Reliability wise its like anything, a good one will be no trouble, a bad one will be total horror. I know plenty of people with high mileage 225's who have had no problems, equally l know people who have had a clutch die at 10k miles.

i would say if the clutch has died at 10k it has been abused most probably

i think i will get a 225 cup , not sure whether to go for the Recaros or not though

Umm l thought abuse on the clutch front but l guess its what you call abuse. As an example, there was a poll on meganesport.net about average fuel consumption. Most people posted figures between 26-32mpg. Five or six people posted figures of 20mpg or less for average day to day driving................guess its what you consider 'normal driving'. It would appear that normal to some people is a full bore start at every traffic light in which case 10-15k miles for a french clutch isn't too hard to imagine. Especially as the 225 clutch isn't anything special, it wasn't specifically designed for the application, more something they already had and decided to use.

Get a 225 Cup but l'd recommend a year old model and trace its history at the servicing dealer to check if its had any suspect faults. It a great car with all the cup extras, l don't really regret buying mine plus its a bit different to the usual ST, VXR, GTI. A reason that most of you probably purchased Skuds?

I thought the F1 had other stuff over the cup like retuned damping and a bigger brake master cylinder.

My stepdad briefly had an F1 a few months ago but rejected it after an engine problem and the dealer taking far too long to repair it. It is being replaced by Renault with an R26 in March, in the mean time he has a diesel megane as a long term courtesy car.

The cup beneifts from the increased sized master cyclinder and re-tuned eibach dampers and springs. The only model with real changes over and above the Cup is the new R26. The increased master cyclinder comes with the drilled discs and Brembo calipers on the Cup, trophy, f1 etc

the problem with getting a year old car from a dealer is that it will probably cost me more for it than a new one from a broker

i spoke to a dealer today , and the only thing they can do at the moment is give 4 years 0% finance , no discount  the salesperson was warning me about not getting an import etc , but all the brokers advertise their cars as UK vehicles with full manufacturer warranty

so

there are as with any renault good ones and bad ones. a bit of a gamble ?? = yes but paying £14k for a brand new cup with 3yrs warenty isnt any hardship only £1k more than i paid for my first (faultless after 40k serioulsly hard miles) 172MKII the step up in quality and build is marked and at least the thing handles very very well is quieter than the VRS even with cup suspension and 18" wheels and are respectivley to the other 20million uk drivers as rare as anything although the good reviews of the R26 may change this.

re the exhaust, engine, brakes, handling you need to get the car warmed up properly before it comes on song.

even the base cup has leccy folding mirrors, ac, trip, crusie, speedlimiter, 8 airbags, etc..

i get 32mpg combined, grp 17ins, yet does 150 and 6ish to 60 not bad and thats before the remap :D

if your a hyper cautious person with regards to reliabilty id stay with the hard to beat VAG if you want some style and individuality and safety at great price then take a calculated risk at the 225

Richard don't do it!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

I picked my 10 month old 10k mile Cup up for £12200 private sale so if you keep your eyes out you can bag a bargain. I used to have a Lupo Gti before this and to be honest l had the same frequency of trips to the dealers and the dealers were woefully bad. At least the larger Renault dealers seem to be half reasonable. Only issue l see is what they cover under warranty, some people on megane.net have had clutches let go very early and had to pay for it. Bit shocking in my opinion.

All said and done l'm still hankering after another Loop Gti or a Mk1 as a toy so its the Dub scene is a hard habit to break.

Well summed up Meggerman :)

Build quality seems excellent to be honest and the power sadly makes my Fabia slow in comparison.

Seriously, people shouldn't underestimate it. The Cup is essentially the same as the R26 except it doesnt have the LSD which tbh isn't the be all and end all.

Oh, and it's got launch control :D

Saw this post linked on the MeganeSport forum so thought I'd pop on and say my bit!! lol :)

Don't let the whole 'its French' mentality influence you. I've owner 5 Renaults altogether, including a Clio 172 and now a Megane 225 and never had any problems. The Megane is far better built than even the RenaultSport Clios, I've owned mine since January this year and its spot on.

I've got the full fat without Cup packs as I wanted a smooth cruiser rather than track car but even still its bloody quick, quicker than people make out. It doesn't have the chuckability of the smaller hatches but he levels of grip are very impressive.

If you get a bad one then yes, you could have some pain in the **** problems. But really problematic ones are few and far between.

Put it this way, I took a mate out for a spin in my 225, he's an avid Jap fan and a bit of a Renault hater and even he was impressed. He said its exactly what he expected of a modern, fast motor. :D

Thats my bit anway!! lol

I've had frequent use of 5 french cars in total. Pug 405, 3 clio 1.2 16v and a laguna 1.8 16v. Apart from the laguna they've had pretty good build quality. The laguna on the other hand....

If reliability is a priority, you'd be better off with the impossible to beat offerings from the Japanese

Chris

Japanese? Suddenly feeling uncontrollably sleepy ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Whats that? Devoid of soul and character? ;):)

Compared to a car from Germany, the land of soul and character?!?!:rofl::rofl:

Chris

I happen to be friends with some highly charismatic germans! Also know some mildly interesting Czech people, and some questionable Spaniards. Its what makes the VAG world go round.

Did we stray off topic? ;)

i agree , i can't even believe i'm contemplating buying a French car , i even rip my neighbour because hes got a Peugeot 206 (he rips me with my Skoda though) but bang for buck i can't see a better specced car for the price you can get one for , i can only think of one hot Jap car , Honda CTR , but that is another car where you have to screw the n#ts off it to go anywhere which is not what i want

Or you could get a normal car and a 2nd hand pug 205 gti 130 which will still be nippy for weekends.

Forget a CTR you want a Racing ITR Litchfield Imports

i reiterate my previous post about not wanting to have to screw the n#ts off the car to get it going , plus that would cost a fortune to insure as its an import , i have been quoted about

would love to have the R26 EddyH but i dont think there will be much discount about on that model :( , due to it being limited edition and that bit special , from what i've read it sounds like an awesome motor

They were referring to the LSD fitted to the car, yes it's an improvement no doubt but in all honesty the Cup would be on a par with a Golf GTi, Focus ST or Astra VXR, and the R26 is a dealer special and costs in excess of

^ true im sure it wont be long before someone is fitting these meg 230 diffs to the 225`s i.e ordering the part from reno cheap and then getting a specialist reno tuner to fit.

until 4wd comes along in the nxt meg (hopefully) traction is always gonna be an issue whats better learning how to drive fast safely or placing faith in a mechanical diff ?

anyways forgetting build and economy the meg is a better car for the car enthusiast imo

It's not a limited edition like original F1 was. They will take as may orders as they can get and there are good discounts available.
