Renaultsport Megane any thoughts

Featured Replies

after my recent roadtest in the Clio 197 , i was a bit disappointed , it was ok but having to rev the nuts off it to go any sort of speed would become a choir , so has anybody any opinions on the Megane 225 or the newer 230 F1 r26 , i was thinking that with it having a turbo i would get better low down torque , not as good as the Fabia VRS , but acceptable , i know Wardys mate has one, but what about anybody else

Hellfire's brother has one.

Its French(No offence)... Build quality.. also majority of Renaults really suffer with electrical probs

Check out this months EVO magazine.

****e.....

Hth :D

The original Renaultsport Megane 225 was a bit pants by all accounts. The Trophy version was a big improvement and won the car a few fans. The r26 team F1 230 version is supposed to be a very good car indeed. the addition of an LSD has worked wonders apparently.

It came second to the Elise in part one of the Evo CotY. And those chaps really don't hold back whether it's good or bad.

Go for it!!!!

I love my Clio Trophy,its so much fun,try one now you've driven a 197 i think you'd be impressed.

The interior isn't as well put together as the 197 but thats not the important bit,the driving of it is!!!!

Keep well ahead of the car behind. You dont want to hit it with bits of trim falling off.

In fact you probably will be in the Renault garage getting it fixed rather than being out on the road!!

Yes......Before you ask, I had a Renault Megane 2

Yes it is quick, but you have to work hard. I'd love it for a second car but couldn't live with it for the daily commute.

I've been running a Renault Megane for the past few months, no issues at all really and it certainly has less rattles and squeaks that my Fabia did. It was my other half's car before hand so I can vouch that it hasn't had any problems, in 2.5 years. Few points to consider...

Drainage systems are very basic on them and it can lead to a few interior leaks if your not aware, and don't clean the channels regularly.

Renault main dealer serviceing is very expensive.

Most eletrical problems appear after 3 years just after warrently has expired... common prioblems include coil packs and key cards going

Over all its been quite a nice car though, comfortable, plenty of space, suprisingly good build quality .... I'd have loved to go for a 225 if I could afford the insurance and low mpg that comes with the ownership of one.

If you like em go for it

Seeming as l own one l'll add my 10 pence worth. To be honest the standard 225 isn't worth having, it handles poorly, doesn't stop and looks grim. Cost and performance wise a 225 Cup is the best option. Both the trophy and F1 versions are no different mechanically to the Cup but you will pay more for them being limited editions with different colours and a metal plate. Build quialty...........well l've come from VW to Renault and ok so its clutch pedal has had a slight issue, its generally ok. Everything shuts with a nice clunk and its all been a reasonabley pleasurable experience. I think the build quality of the Megane is alot different to the Clio. Seems more solid.

I think renaults are just a bit more hit and miss than VAG group cars, get a good one and they're awesome, get a bad one and you'll want to die.

Performance wise, mines standard at the minute but still put out 240bhp at the awesome rolling road day. The handling is seriously hot with the Cup susension pack which consists of Eibach dampers and springs with thicker AR bars. Also you get some quite serious looking Brembo calipers and drilled discs all round which are awesome once some heats in them and some nice anthracite 18's with 235 rubber. If you look at the stats peak power is quite low down the rev range, its definately more of a grunter than a screamer but once you've worked out how to get the most out of it, it really flies. As a direct comparison my bro has a standard VRS Fab and well.....................anyway lets just say its not really the same.

Forgot to mention the two only real downsides to my 225 Cup. 26mpg average and the Megane forums suck, hence why l'm on here ;)

Apart from the limited slip differential fitted to the F1, a bit more power (5BHP) and a bit more torque.

Nope, it hasn't, thats the new R26 230 dude. The F1 is a Cup with different colour, stickers and a plaque. The new R26 230 is the only Meg with a limited slip. And if you're considering one of those new then you're in a different price range to a 225 Cup or F1.

My mate has one running 275 BHP.

I would have one if I didn't have the vRS

Only slight issue is the clutch on them, it seems to be ok for the standard output but l've heard of a few cooking clutches at 14-20k miles with remaps. I'd love to have a remap but l'm probably too much of a wuss at the moment, probably make do with an exhaust, BOV and induction for now.

seen a Trophy On the Autotrader site , whats the difference between that and a cup/standard spec car other than a plaque , is £13k a reasonable price for a low miler ?

well i've just signed up for the Megane forum :o , it seems to be very quiet compared to on here , so i dont expect many replies to my post asking general Megane225 questions :(

 I thought the F1 was the R26 230? Is that another version then?

Many years ago I had a Clio 16V (the MK1 version) and even though I chipped it and junked the catalyst, it never missed a beat. In fact the only problem I had in the car in around 60K miles was one of the engine mounts worked a little loose. The service department said they thought I had been

well i had a go in Meggermans 225 Cup at the Xscape met , and i've got to say i was pretty impressed , it does pull very well and goes like a rocket  , just got to find one cheap enough at a broker now

I have a friend who has sold cars for a living for the last 30 years. Recently when getting a car for my daughter, I asked him what were the 'bad' cars of today.

After thinking for a minute he said - they're all pretty good these days - except Renault, the electronics are too complicated, a bad earth and no-one can fix it!

Indeed another man I know is having all kinds of trouble with a brand new Megane which cuts out - typically when waiting at traffic lights - he is quietly going beserk because the supplying garage can't fix it and indeed claim not to have seen the fault !! (We've all heard that one before!!!).

Years back, I was involved with supply of electronics to PSA group / Magneti Marelli as well as virtually all the other European manufacturers. Although you are less likely to have problems now than back in the 1990's those I know still in the supply business still reckon ALL PSA group cars to be less good than other European brands in reliability terms.

It is not so much how good or bad the problems are, but more a case of probability of problems, with PSA group having a generally higher failure rate. A good one will be a good one though and by all accounts, the Megane is supposed to be an excellent drive.

In response to the spec post. Basically you get the standard car or 'full fat' 225 then you get the full fat with cup pack as an optional extra which includes brakes, wheels, suspension etc. You then get the Cup which is the lightweight version which has ar-con rather than full climate and all the fancy brakes, wheels and suspension. Then you get the Trophy and the F1 (mostly blue) which are both essentially Cup spec cars but with recaro seats as standard and different colours and alos limited edition. Finally you get the new R26 230 F1 whatever you want to call it which has cup suspension, uprated ARB and limited slip diff, oh and 5bhp extra l think down to a remodelled exhaust.

Reliability wise its like anything, a good one will be no trouble, a bad one will be total horror. I know plenty of people with high mileage 225's who have had no problems, equally l know people who have had a clutch die at 10k miles.
