Mr Clarkson on remapping/chipping

Featured Replies

Jeromy Clarkson is great. True Legend!!!! I think he talks sense and atleast backs up his opinions with great reasoning.

Legends are remembered for their achievements, AND mistakes they made in their life.

1) The turbo in the Polo is different to the found in the TT.

2) Not everything is a 'can be done' situation 'because they share the same engine, so they could have done so in the first place'.

3) VW are not stupid enough to inject 237bhp into a Polo, otherwise their Golf GTi sales would plummet, R32 sales would be non-existent given a sill-heavy engine and TT sales will hit the pits like an asteroid hits Earth. Purely political, sales-oriented move.

4) This doesn't go to say people have different tastes and have more approach to style than performance, but saying that, the new Polo doesn't look half bad with a kit and if it can go, their's no reason why no one would buy it.

That review he put up must have VW engineers laughing their a$$es off.

The point JC was making was that even though you could get it remapped, 148bhp is enough for the Polo GTi. And then he went on to say you should remap a Mini One rather than buy a Cooper. I don't understand why everyone's getting so upset and defensive. He's not anti-remapping, just saying that there are some cars which benefit from it, and others that don't. I don't see how anyone could disagree with that.

IIRC he actually said cars that come out of a factory should be left stock because that's how they were designed, and if they could have done more, they would.

Clarksons a legend. He would be on my list for dinner guests.

Mr C should watch this

learn to count and then he should go and ask peoplewho have had their cars remapped to see if it is good value for money.

I will say that yes some cars do not benefit from a remap as the engines are too small and usually non aspirated but as an example while in Italy we hired a Lancia Muso to go on a training course and to cut a long story short we remapped the hire car while we had it and it went from 50mpg to 70mpg with a lovely gain in the midrange torque making the car very nice to drive. It was only a 1.3 turbo diesel but it would leave most non turbo 1.6 in the dust and have fantastic fuel consumption to boot thus helping the enviroment!!

non aspirated? like an electric car or summat

:P ;)

Couldn't have put it better myself........

And on this occassion I also agree...

It shows a complete lack of knowledge about anything to do with remapping, what irritates me most is people read this and take his word as the be all and end all when infact he is speaking utter bo$$ocks...

some people tend to take everything he says as gospel...

as much as i like mr clarkson i dont really agree with him on the fact he dosent think the polo can handle the 237 bhp of the tt, my ibiza is running 236 bhp and its fine ok it spins in the wet but what rear wheel drive cars dont spin up in the soaking wet. as for the remapping i bet the tunners there werent as big as the likes of revo or cc so i dont think he can slag mapping off untill he has driven a remapped polo

thats just my thoughts

As I've said before, he should be treated as an iconoclast and polemicist, and in no way as knowledgable about automotive engineering.

I think some people secretely love clarkson and then when he says something that they dont like or is the opposite of what they think, they get all upset and start calling him names etc... Sort of like when you upset your missus over something.

Well thats what it looks like on here anyway. If he had shared the same view as these people calling him names they would have been falling overthemselves to pull his trousers down and top him off.

Like if he were to say a Skoda was uncool, for instance?:rofl::rofl:

Indeed:rofl:

Or to accuse someone of "being tight" because they didn't want to pay a premium price for a car that they find actively uncomfortable?

Chris - Not sure why almost all your comments nowadays are taking a pop at Skoda / VAG and their owners  . I realise you had more than your fair share of issues with your Skoda (as have some others) but there are plenty of others on with no problems for long periods. I personally believe that Skoda / VAG are reasonably reliable (although definitely not top of the tree like some people believe) but in the same way as most other manufacturers you get lemons & poor examples. Just because your Skoda was lousy it doesn't mean that generally the marque isn't reasonably reliable. I agree some people here (in the same way as for all car sites) need to hear both sides of the story and, sometimes told they are talking s***, ... but constant :rofl:  slagging from an ex-owner without genuine comment is IMHO a bit crap :thumbdwn: . BTW Before you ask - my previous 2 cars were a Sierra and Mondeo (which were excellent) so I know how much ill informed comment there is out there :)

Back on Topic - I like Clarkson for what he is - ie. an entertainer with outspoken views and a love of cars. He is like most other punters on the road biased, opinionated and a bit of prat at times BUT that is his strength as it gets people talking / arguing and tuning in for another episode of TG. Having said that I would never test / buy any car relying on comments from JC - I would read more from true "road test" people that were factual and detailed about the technical aspects of a car. At the end of the day everyone needs something different from a car so we will neevr agree on everything (or anything is many cases :D )

Well written

I do believe though that chris was pointing to a previous thread where everyone cried when clarkson said the fabia vrs was uncool.

Indeed ;)

Chris

Some cars work well with a remap (or even a tuning resistor ;)).

I would however suspect that a more expensive car would have a better quality of tune off-factory. The Fabia vRS has a fairly weak clutch compared to the rest of the drive train, but then as standard it is meant to be a warm hatch, not a hot hatch.

If you want to safely put down the power you'll end up spending a fair bit on handling modifications.

Other cars have excellent handling off-factory (Ford Focus, MINI) and are able to handle a remap quite nicely.

Clarkson then - I think he has his own style, some like it, some don't. He is entertaining in his own right, I wouldn't take his word as gospel but I enjoy watching Top Gear, and I've (been given) (got) some of his DVDs.

Sometimes he is a total @rse, other times he's right, IMHO ;) He often disagrees with others and himself over time, and doesn't deny it.

I just take it as it was intended, a bit of a laugh :D

I woudn't buy a car because he thought it was good/bad.

And his oppinion won't stop me doing what I want to my car*

*although the only modifying I have managed to do so far is break stuff, but thinking of the future here.

Off topic slightly but what the hell. Although the clutch may be the weak point on the Fabia, mine has been fine on a car remapped in excess of over 40,000 miles. No slippage, not once, no burning smells or high biting point. Hopefully it'll be fine for many a year to come :)

And on this occassion I also agree...

People need to realise he's just taking the **** and trying to offend as many different people as he can in the space of a few hundred words. People who dislike him take him far too literally and fall hook line and sinker for his writing formula, which, incidentally he shares with his pal, AA Gill.

I think he's amusing in small doses, and at least he stands up for car drivers and jolly good chaps in general, against the tree hugging hand woven yogurts brigade...

I just dislike him because he is a pretend Yorkshireman.

I appreciate his comedic value, and his intelligence.

I detest his faux poor backround, and his 'one of the lads' attitude.

He came from a middle class privileged backround, and imo he should admit it, instead of pretending to be a working class lad made good.

I wonder if he has actually seen the gritty side of Doncaster.

He should try a wet weekend in Bridlington in a caravan, then see if his sense of humour and 'Yorkshireness' remains intact.

He is, and shall remain a pillock, until he arrives at my door, in not so sunny Halifax, and gives me his car keys, and his weekly wage and tells me to do his job for a week, and he do mine.

It would make great tv.

Also, thinking about the original Octavia vRS press car, wasn't that tweaked anyway? So this means that in reality the Mk1 vRS was capable of handling the increased power and torque because the manufacturer did it themselves.

Ask Freakcrab, I think the press car was originally his but may have been modded before he bought it

Clarkson is good entertainment value but you can't really take him seriously. Mind you a guy I used to work with was his cousin and when I said that surely he was only like that on the TV , he replied that no he really is exactly like that and a total self-opinionated txxt and unashamedly.

So what you see is what you get and let's not forget that he did buy a Ford GT, which never worked....I rest my case.

He came from a middle class privileged backround, and imo he should admit it, instead of pretending to be a working class lad made good.

Totaly off topic, but this is an interseting point. Why in this day and age are people ashamed of coming from a middle class background?

Why do so many people have to big themselves up by making out they come from a working class background and "made" themselves

What's the problem with admitting you are "middle class"

I have no problem of admitting that I'm Middle Class AND went to Public School
