Turbine noise on start up has stopped???

Featured Replies

Hi,

When I open the drivers door of the car I normally get a turbine like noise for a few seconds then the same noise again when I turn the ignition on. I believe that this is something to do with an air pump for the cat (please correct me as I'm sure you will if this is complete rhubarb).

I noticed yesterday that my MKI Octy vRS has stopped making this noise, what does this mean, has something broken???

Any help would be great...

Cheers

i was lead to belive this was the fuel pump priming don't know why yours would have stopped though

hth

yea i would have said fuel pump going on the noise.

Try and get it checked out if your worried as the last thing you want is a nackered fuel pump over christmas

Fuel pump... that's got me nice and freaked out now....

It does seem to run normally through once you turn the engine over and it got me home yesterday and into work today with out a problem.

Phoned garage and popping in on the way to work tomorrow.

mine only seems to do it when its been sat doing nothing overnight etc

when warm it doesnt i suppose its cos the fuel line is primed maybe

I think what you are talking about is the secondary air pump, it pumps extra air in to reduce emmisions from cold. not sure why it would have stopped working though, must say I have not noticed mine for a while. you can't hear the fuel pump, well from outside anyway. the secondary air pump does start when dvrs door is opend. please correct if wrong anyone.

Good luck.

i just jumped in mine whilst it was warm and there was no noise when opening the drivers door but it does do it first thing in the morning

I'm pretty sure it's made this sound every time I've opened the drivers door (first time after an unlock anyway) then again when the ignition is turned on, ever since I've had the car. My father in-law's MK1 Octy (2.0L) does exactly the same.

So it could either be secondary air pump, fuel pump, or some form of ABS test.

I have no lights on the dash and all seems normal, I would have thought that if anyone of these failed then some form of dash warning would be seen?

Or could it be that it is all very very normal and I'm just getting paranoid?

A few weeks ago I got caught out in some very heavy rain here and ended up driving through some very deep puddles / floods. The car handled it perfectly but is it possible that something got a bit too wet?

i wouldnt worry until something dies tbh i spend half my driving time thinking is this right is that right i end up doing my own head in

i'm 99% it's the fuel pump cos if you sit quietly in the car when you stop youll hear the draining back int th e tank

so when this is fully drained back it has to be primed again if you get me

Thats normal. Its the fuel pump priming itself, but it will only do it if it has been standing long enough for the fuel to drain back. If you open the door and it primes, then you shut the door and open it again it wont re-prime itself. HTH.

I take it the noise comes from the rear of the car when you open the drivers door.... if it does its the cd changer in the boot firing up ready for use.mine does this and took me a while to work out what the noise was.

Fuel pump priming.

Secondary air pump is much noiser.

which is what i meant:thumbup:

Popped into the local garage this morning and had a chat with the 'technician' there. They said that if it's all running OK not to worry and that some fuel pumps are noisier than others and that with time the amount of noise they make can change.

So I think the next step is to have a good listen when the local kids aren't screaming up and down the street to find out if mine has just gone into quiet mode.

Cheers for all your help guys.

The noise that you hear for a few seconds when you unlock the car and open the driver's door is the fuel-pump priming itself. As has been mentioned above, it primes only if the car has been sitting idle for several hours.

Once you start the engine, you will hear a turbine like noise for almost a minute. Again this will be only on a cold start, when the engine revs are around 1200-1300. After about 45-60 seconds, when the engine revs drop to 800-1000, the turbine noise will also go off. This is the secondary air-pump, diluting the exhaust gases

You should check if you hear these noises on a cold-start/door open.

1 Open drivers door whine (turbine like noise) : cd changer loading up

2 Turn on ignition buzzing noise : fuel pump priming

3 Start engine drone: air pump running (if engine cold)

4 Why would you want a fuel pump running when you opened the door???

1 Open drivers door whine (turbine like noise) : cd changer loading up

if thats the case then my cd changer is magic cos its disconnected

as said its the fuel pump priming not running

its getting ready for you to start the car

ie filling up the fuel line

the other points are correct though

Maybe the CD's fall out when the car has been left for a few hours, therefore they need pushing back in  ..........or maybe its just the fuel pump priming like has been said at least 6 times on this unnecessarily long thread.

That buzzing when you switch the ignition on is the throttle body motor powering up AIUI.

maybe its just the fuel pump priming like has been said at least 6 times on this unnecessarily long thread

i know but there's just no telling some people
