What would you like to have in a DIY workshop manual?

Featured Replies

I'll start with my own wishes in random order:

What can VAGCOM do with your particular car.

How to take the interior apart without breaking something.

Fixing common illnesses in your particular car, like water entering through the door, the temperature sensor burried deep inside the dash, and the easy-to-switch anti-roll-bar connector.

press with all the bushings for doing wheel bearings and suspension bushes etc

A damn good index, because the problem you've got isn't going to be covered exactly by the manual.

A good sized wiring diagram in colour coded form with the equipment identified properly.

Clear diagrams on door panel and interior trim removal.

Decent colour shots of the key DIY maintenance jobs.

Torque settings expressed in old farts familar terms like lbs-ft, as Nms and Kpa are anathema to me.

practical 'hints and tips' for fault finding for those of us who don't have VAG-COM.

That's about it.

£50 note on every other page, then you can afford to take it to a garage.

A list of all parts with manufacturer's part number

A list of all screws, nuts etc., including sizes.

Detailed wiring and circuit diagrams.

System diagrams.

Gearbox details.

Large and clear pictures including colour ones.

Detailed photos showing the typical wear or breakage that can be expected for all repair and maintenance on my Skoda and NOT some ancient generic photos of Fords or Vauxhalls. I need to be able to see what is acceptable / unacceptable wear on my car.

Hints and tips on how to do the repairs using improvising commonly available DIY tools or materials. I hate it when the repair manual always refers to specialist tools.

I hate it also when the repair manual says,"Re-assembly is a direct reversal of the dismantling procedure." It never is ! There are always problems, so it would be nice to be guided around them.

Furthermore, what use is a repair manual that for every major strip-down of a system or mechanism it advises "Due to the complexity of the assembly and /or need for special equipment, it is advised that servicing is left to a Skoda specialist garage?" At the very least I expect a detailed exploded view of the assembly in question and a description as to how it functions - then I can make up my mind about my competence at undertaking the job.

Accurate technical data for all variants of the vehicle would be nice, including all modifications/ changes since its original release.

Oh yes, and please, no more references to improving the performance of the diesel engine by "cleaning the spark plugs, checking the dwell angle and adjusting the petrol/air ratio. Statements like these only make the publishers loose credibility. Please take note Mr Haynes!

Maybe we should just buy proper VW or AUDI's so we could use the Bentley CD's highly praised in the USA

Shame it's not on all vag models. I hope our manual can better it; as it will be created by us the community. We have enough data here to get started afterall :)

Other peoples comments on the task in question.

It's a very good idea to have a DIY workshop manual compiled by BRISKODA. I would suggest that this manual be printed on loose sheet, all kept in a ring binder, so when there are any additions, amendments, etc. you only have to change that particular leaf. and the manual will always be updated.
