Apologies for the low res pictures, but everytime I am near a proper camera it is dark, so some pictures are better than none ;)

And it just arrived. Not sure what they mean with the wiring instructions though. Brown to ground (pin 8 on the black connector) and red to 12V (pin 4 on the black connector) are easy, but the yellow "12V over a switch to look while driving (Only DX Navi)" ?? I'm using the plug&play cable with integrated "TV-on-the-go" switch already, so I'm not sure what this yellow cable should plug into...

Anyone else wired up a similar AV/AUX in his MFD?

I think it's for a reversing Camera. Steve had one for the MFD2 which had a similar connection.

Hmm, that would sort of make sense. I'll connect it up without the yellow wire first and then see if it works or not.

Installed it last night using the red and brown wires and presto, it works

Only thing I didn't think realise is that switched live is not related to the MFD being on/off, but to the ignition being on/off... so when I first tried it I got audio (as that pretty much goes straight through the 'magic box', but no picture... until I realised I had to switch on the ignition :D In hindsight I should have just used the permanent 12V.

Does your unit light up VW blue and red when you switch your headlights on? I have a version D unit in my Gora and would quite like to take it with me when I get a Fabia vRS, but dont really want it to light up red when the rest of the instruments are illuminated green.

If it's a VW unit it will be VW coloured.

Aww bugger! Thanks Stu for confirming that for me. Look like I'll need to try and sorce a Skoda unit then and sell my VW one when the Fabia arrives.

Yup, all the buttons light up red. Doesn´t look too bad imho, although if I ever come accross someone who is able to do SMB(?) soldering, then I´d be tempted to change them to green.

Hmm, not all is well in video land :(

When I watch video on the MFD, I get the dreaded alternator whine :(

No problem when watching video with the ignition off, and all the other functions (radio and CD changer) do not have the alternator whine. As I only have connected 2 wires (red and black) to the wiring loom and only have 3 RCA's to play with, what can I do? Connect the black (ground wire from AV AUX unit) to a different earth/ground point? Get a ground loop isolator (Ground Loop Isolator) and connect it between the video player and AV AUX unit?

  • Author

Forgot to add, the AV AUX unit itself connects to the HU through some thick black wire+connector (as seen on the picture above), so I can't connect anything in between that. Unless someone knows different?

Steve had a similar unit albeit for the MFD2 with similar problem.

  • Author

With similar unit you refer to the AV AUX or to the Ground Loop isolator? And has he been able to resolve it?

The AV Unit.

We couldn't get it to show video so it went back as faulty but playing music it had the ignition whine.

  • Author

K, thanks. From reading on the VW Navi forums, it seems these units only 'convert' video, and audio is almost pushed straight through, so having the ground loop isolator between the video player and the av aux unit should hopefully not matter much. If I can get to a Maplins I may even be able to get a refund after trying it.

The way to get around your alternator whine is to buy a noise suppressor from Maplins. I fitted a PhatNoise 20Gb MP3 player with my sat nav to my Gora and it had the faint whine, but knowing about this problem before it was properly installed I got the noise suppressor which totally eliminated the problem. Think there are about a fiver so its not gonna break the bank. HTH.

Heres a link to the very thing.

20A DC NOISE SUPPRESSOR

How you would connect it up I'm not too sure, as I never did any of the wiring on my car.

  • Author

Seems no longer in supply by Maplins, so I'll have to see if I can find it elsewhere. It mentions three wires, so I can't exactly imagine how it would wire up...

  • 3 weeks later...

Bought a ground loop isolator today from Maplins, but it made no difference whatsoever. Think the next step will be to try the noise supressor (if I can find one). May have to wait till my handsfree kit arrives as I don't fancy removing the MFD too many times.

  • Author

Hmm, from Noise Prevention

V. Never use the ground wire in the vehicle's OEM radio harness. This wire usually makes a very poor ground due to it's length, small wire gauge, close proximity to other power wires, and unknown termination point. Instead, ground the source unit directly to the chassis or firewall.

Guess that will be my first point of call then :(

Is any part of the chassis (bare metal) a good ground? And how do you attach a single wire to it? Tis only a short/thin wire...

You could inline crimp another wire to the existing and then it would be normal to crimp on a ring tongue to fix to the ground.

There is a very nice ground next to the steering column on the Octy I. Where is your little box of goodies?

  • Author

The little box sits at the moment on the far left side of the car as that is where i had some space to stuff it, and still be able to access it. Next to the steering column on which side?

Right hand side.

You'll be able to pick something up under the dash/glovebox.
