Te revive a old thread:

Has the alternator whine been resolved?

Just fitted one of these adaptors to my MFD2 and there is more noise than a rock concert, and it just gets worse when the xenons are fired up!

I think it's coming from the RCA cables so I've ordered some shielded ones as I have a switch box so I can chop between my DVD player, MP3 player and digital telly (work in progress this one) and the current RCA's are a little on the cheap side.

I also have noise being fed onto the screen via the video cables so hopefully the shelding will sort it.

If not I will need some ground loop isolators but I dont know if these will help the on screen noise.

It doesnt help that silly bo****ks here ran his power cable alongside the RCA.

No, the whinge has not yet been resolved. I was waiting for my Parrot kit to arrive, but now I've left the Haynes manual at work

Will be tackled over the next few weeks though, as the car goes off the road to have the wheels refurbished.

Ok, i'll wait for my shielded RCA's and see what happens.

If it makes no difference I'll try suppressing the power supplies themselves.

The xenons induce a very high pitched noise onto the signal, not a million miles from the old TV test card tone. - horrid!

Another point, The yellow wire is to enable the screen to run while the vehicle is in motion (preumably fudges the GALA signal) All good and well on the MFD/DX unit in the Octy mk.1

The MFD2 has CAN/L & CAN/H connections, is this where the MDF2 works out that the car is running? I can't locate a dedicated GALA cable or the like from the pin diagram on the MFD2.

Next question: whats the best way to fool the unit into thinking its not actually moving so my passenger can see the screen?

OE fit at least on Octavia's and Superbs with MFD1 use 2 feeds for motion pulses which are abs L and R feeds so would expect that the MFD2 OE fit may use this as well. No comment on fooling the unit

Ok, I presumed the motion was via the CAN-BUS and I don't really want to fiddle with that or any other cables that might do the job.

At the end of the day i am asking for trouble having a DVD playing whilst driving.

I'll leave it be methinks.

I fitted a filter to the power cables feeding the MFD2 adaptor box and it's reduced the noise by about 80%, I got the filter from Halfords for about £7 or so.

Considering the cost of the box it would have been nice if they fitted a filter to it, it's only a ruddy cap and a little inductor.

I still have noise but it's hardly noticeable compared to before. The xenons are still the main culprit (HF ballasts methinks)

The remaining noise is being induced into the RCA cables which will hopefully be solved when the shielded cables arrive next week.

I'll also seperate the power feed to the DVD player from the RCA's going to the switch box.

On my superb, I found the only way to stop the whine was to suppress the power supply to whatever Audio/Video device you are using.

I noticed that when I was listening to my I-Pod through the MFD Navi, if it was plugged into the cigar lighter socket to recharge I got the whine, as soon as I unplugged it the whine stopped, so when I fitted the DVD player I fitted a suppressor to the power supply and never got any whine.

I have a second suppressor on standby for that very reason, I am assuming the DVD player will have the appropriate electronics to clean the power supply.

I played my Iriver through the MFD and there is a very slight whine and hum in the background.

I think it is a combination of the RCA's and the DVD player power cabling.

Methinks I'll fit the suppressor to the common cigarette lighter wiring as most of the equipment is supplied from that point.

My rebuild has started today and I spend a good few hours completely dismantling the console

These Parrot kits don't come half with cables ;)

Still, once I'm finished, you would think it came with the car...

These MFD2 units still play CDs as well as do the satnav thing, right? My Dad's been thinking about one for his new GTI

How do the existing double DIN units come out? I looked for some slots, etc but couldn't see anything.

Octavia-vRS.com - MFD2 Install Guide

MFD2 has a single CD slot in the unit (Skoda ones are CD for now and latest VW ones are DVD), you can listen to CD's in the slot BUT you lose the sat nav function.

They work best with a CD changer for obvious reasons, or you can go down the AUX in route that some are embarking upon but there can be teething troubles (see above).

The beauty of the Octy 2 centre console is that it's got loads of room in it for cables and the like, but there are also 2 air ducts for the rear footwells and jumbo box.

Second noise filter is going in tomorrow at work and the shielded cables should be here on tuesday so hopefully this will fix my ground loop issues.

Off topic I know, but where are you getting your wheels refurbed Q?

Steve

BJV Engineering - Alloy Wheel Refurbishment

Have used them twice before and they do a fantastic job for not a lot of money.

Aha - so the sat nav needs the sat nav CD in and working for it to do that. Dad's GTI didn't come with a CD changer, so I suspect in the long run he might go for a portable sat nav unit, and stick with the stock GTI radio setup. :)

If you can be bothered to persue a possible AUX input to the head unit it might be worth the hassle. I have been playing my MP3 player through the MFD2 all day and the sound quality is miles better than the internal CD player and the boot mounted auto changer.

By tweaking with the EQ settings on my player I can get the sound quality spot on in the car

The noise is down to near zero now the second suppressor has been fitted to the DVD power supply, this wiring was running paralell to the RCA's for about 12 inches where it runs behind the centre console.

Nearly there :D

HELP !!!! this is my 1st post, so apologies upfront!

I have installed the VW MFD in my 02 octavia vrs, just has the photos show.

My unit is a 'G' all works fine except - when driving my position is always behind and the arrow takes a time to catch up. My radio volume increases when driving so i assume that gala is connected. The setting for the pulse is at 8.

I have been pulling my hair out, and i'm now stuck. please can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong. as i cant seem to grasp it!!!!

Thanks in advance, once again apologies if this is in the forums. :o

I'm not sure about the MFD but on the MFD2 you can calibrate the position of the car within the unit.

If not, depending on which type of car it came from it may have the wrong ABS pulse set in the soft coding. Do you have VAG-COM?

Golf and I pressume Octavia should be set to 43. Controller 37, 10, channel 2.

How long has it been in? IIRC you need to drive about for 10 miles or so for it to calibrate... Mine was all over the place for a few miles but now works fine.

Yeah, as Phil says, drive it for a good couple of miles and it should find the correct position.

i can get access to vag com at my local garage, but they dont know what is normal and what would need changing.

i put it in my car about a week ago, today i noticed the pulse (3+6 & flag) was set to 45, which if i read corectly should be set to 8 for gala.

i tried driving around for about 20 miles and still the same. its akward, vw want to sell me the latest map cd, skoda no idea & local audio shop offered a can-bus unit, without even looking for the picely sum of

As I posted above, the ABS pulse should be 43. 45 is a Passat.

so i should set pulse to 43, leave the tyre settings to 2000 ( default ),

do all octavia run on abs pulse? if so does this mean i have to get a can bus unit?

sorry for the ignorance but i dont have a clue what should be what!

I'm not 100% sure on how yours will be connected with, I presume, a "Plug & Play" lead from eBay.

It's been a while since I saw one and can't remember exactly which pins are connected.

I don't think the CANBUS lead you are being offered will help as at the price you quoted I'd say it was for an Octy II.

Have a look for a forum called VWNavi.
