USB v Firewire...which to go for

Featured Replies

Go firewire

Firewire has a constant 400mbps where as USB is a burst rate of 480mbps so in short USB sucks unless you only want to transfer something small hence why USB hard drives are always cheaper than firewire ones

Yep plus lower CPU overhead on large transfers, plus the F/W one has F/W and usb2 and also IIRC the premium version has something else other then just F/W over the essential edition.

I've always found Firewire to more reliable than USB. The connectors have a much more 'positive' fit.

USB is OK for mice, keyboards etc but in my opinion Firewire is the way to go for big data like hard-drives, camcorders etc. Really disappointed that the new iPods are USB now rather than Firewire.

It's VHS vs Betamax all over again (kinda...)

Big reason against FW is that it is not available on a lot of machines, whereas USB2 tends to be these days, on Mac/PC/linux rigs.

That said if you have FW already it is definitely the one to go for :)

big reason against USB is that it sucks ****...:)

Couldnt live without it on my laptop, got external HDD, DVDRW, keyboard, mouse, scanner, memory sticks etc all on USB2. No firewire will do that ;)
