Rear Fog Lights

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm not sure if I have lost the plot but here goes:

I thought both rear foglights worked when I first had the car, but now I am starting to doubt myself.

Anyway, noticed a little while ago that the nearside one wasn't working. This lunchtime, I went to Halfords and picked up a new bulb, which is a twin filament jobbie. Put the bulb in, tail light bit works, as it did with the old bulb, but foglight still doesn't work.:(

So really the question is, are both rear foglights operational 'out of the box' or is a twiddle with the settings scenario?

Thanks

Chris

are you sure you are meant to have 2 fog rear light?

i know for a fact on the fabia that its wired up for both near and offside... but only 1 side is meant to work.

do a search - fabia has bulbs/holders both sides - only 1 works - gotta run a wire between the two holders - do a search

but chris is asking about the superb.... not the fabia....

The Superb only has 1 foglight on the drivers side, found this out when wiring in the foglight cut out switch when installing a towbar, the passenger side does have a lense and a place for the bulb in the bulb holder but it isnt wired up. does seem a bit strange for a car of this size!

The Superb only has one fogllight fitted as standard on the driver's side.

Legally you only have to have one foglight which can either be positioned centrally on the back of the car or to the driver's side for cars within the UK. For European cars the foglamp has to obviously be on the other side as that's where the steering wheel is.

You can easily wire the other foglamp up and the Fabia thread shows something similar.

You can try to fit that bulb in the passenger side but the bulbcarrier and wiring is not set up for it!!!

Legally Skoda don't have to fit one and in that sense it's cheaper for them to make two lamps with only 9 bulbs instead of two lamps with 10 bulbs (for example).

The Superb has the bulb fitted for rear foglights on both sides as it's a twin filament type shared with the tail lamps.

If you look at the LH lamp unit, everything is there but one connector pin is blank - ie. not connected to the vehicle wiring. All you have to do is to connect this spare pin to the corresponding connection for the foglight on the RH side and you will have two foglamps. I did this when I fitted my towbar.

Thanks Rotodiesel. I have a look at both units over Xmas.

Just in case I have misunderstood you: Are you saying it is possible to adapt the unit to the same connections as offside unit, or are you saying that the nearside unit has to be wired to the offside unit?

Sorry, I'm not trying to sound thick, honest.

All the Best

Chris

Chris, The part of each lamp unit carrying the bulbs and the connector to the vehicle wiring (white plastic, unclips from the back of the lamp unit inside the boot) is exactly the same, left and right.

The wiring harness in the vehicle has one less connection on the left side (6 instead of 7 if I remember correctly), so on the left side bulb carrier there is one unused pin. If you connect this unused (male) pin to the corresponding one on the right hand side (route the wire under the trim after removing the springy tie-down handles), both foglamps will work together. I checked the fuse rating, and it's fine for running 2 lamps.

 Thanks Rotodiesel:thumbup:

I'll check it out when I'm off work.

Cheers
