New Octavia VRs TFSI or Focus ST-3 ???

Featured Replies

I've looked at them and you can get them cheap but I imagine they'll get a resale price to match.

But if you keep the car for 5 years as mentioned before, wot it's worth will very little.

for me though having been in an ST I think the long distance Comfort is better in the Oct'y, Hope you enjoy your new car.

If I was purely going for looks, it would be the ST every time. But unfortunately there's usually a lot more to consider...

As someone who's not that young anymore and having been through a fair number of cars, i get bored very quickly, you want something that you are really going to be happy with for the next 5 years. To me that's a VERY long time to stick with one car, so you need to be extra sure about it.

So as some else has already said, get the one you're really happy with and really want to drive, the rest is just talk.

You seem to be in a position to do just that, so i'd advise to do it, later on in life you maybe won't get that luxury ;)

Neil.

I got offered a 06 black vrs with 5 miles and 18" for 15750 but a 07 model is 15999 on broadspeed. Also I want more options than that.

Does anyone have a pic of a vrs on 17s, can't find one anywhere ?

Here's mine on 17s

18s will obviously look better, but remember the the radius of the tyre is the same(the tyre wall is shallower with the 18) so the distance from the top of the rubber to the wheel arch is the same for both 17s and 18s.

RRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

:D Nice one Jeremy.

I like the look of both cars but after having two previous Ford's I would not buy from that manufacturer because of poor build quality issues. The Octavia Vrs is the thinking man's (mid 30's, doing quite well for himself, unassuming not in yer face type) sports hatch. The ST is here I am look at me, come and race me and loose and them find out where I live and vandalise me type of car. Take the Skoda any time.

Comparing same year cars, I can assure you that Ford are as good, if not better than Skoda! ;):D

Sorry Chris but you are wrong. Not sure if you have bought brand new before but my last four cars have been brand new, one nissan very good, two fords enough said and one skoda. Got to say my next car will be either a skoda or audi. No offence mate.

re performance - Autocar tested vRS vs Golf vs Focus and for them, slowest car to 60 was the Focus.

I'm sorry but I find that very hard to believe.

Focus ST 221 bhp, 236 ft.lbs,. 1317kg kerb weight

Octavia 2.0 TFSi 197bhp, 207ft.lbs, 1400kg kerb weight.

I cannot for the life of me see how the Octy would be quicker. And I am willing to put money on the Focus outhandling the Octy too when the corners appear.

No doubt a Focus would be the more nimble, and it does sound unlikely, but here's an Autocar link:

Skoda Octavia Hatchback 2.0T FSI vRS 5dr - Road Test Summary - Autocar Online

And some relevant text:

"Nonetheless, the vRS impressed at the track, reaching 60mph in 6.6sec and 100mph in 17.3sec (seven-tenths faster than the GTi), and around the Millbrook bowl: where a GTi stops accelerating at 136mph, the Octavia squeezed out a further 7mph to reach 143mph. Given the Octavia

Gearing perhaps?

Or someone's been naughty and tinkered with the press car (again!) ;)

Surely not?

Seems odd vebause the VRS is supposed to take well over 7 seconds to get to 60

Surely not?

Have a chat with Freakcrab who bought the Mk1 Octy vRS press car which Autocar reviewed and subsequently discovered it wasn't quite standard ;)

Come on Freakcrab, spill the beans... :) :) :) :)

We all know the MK1 story.

To open up another can of worms, maybe the Golf Autocar had at the time was pre-BWA engined. And Golf vs Octy, which has better aerodynamics? That'd make a top end difference.

Again, it's all moot unless all you care about is stats. Or you're into shredding clutches and tyres all the time.

ford poor build quality?

i had a mk2 fiesta that was very solidly built, a 1992 sierra that was still in one piece and only had one rattle with high milage and 14 years old and a 1999 focus that was perfectly well built and waaaaaaay more reliable than my octavia could ever wish to be(my brother also has a 1999 focus with impecable build quality), my octavia has far and away been the most unreliable car i've ever owned and i owned a 12 year old 1.3 metro GTa!!

Not all, thats why I asked...

My first car was a brand new fiesta 1.4tdci ghia, never had any problems with it, my paretns have also bought 7 fords over the last 10 years, only problem was the galaxy (made by vw), the electronics nox filled with water from snow in the footwell, there on everything went wrong, cruise control staying stuck on, engine cutting out including brakes at 110mph on the autobahn

Many thanks,

Have a great Christmas.

in terms of performance on paper there's not really much in it, but the Focus would probably be a more fun to drive. and Octavia vRS is way too oldmanish stying wise... ;)

Theyre both very different cars to drive...

The focus engine+gearing is very lazy.. at opposites to the Octy..

when i drove the ST, the engine was almost diesel-like in its power delivery.. there was no point in revving past 5k.. the engine seemed to favour its low-down lazy torque rather than revvy BHP.

the Octy on the otherhand begs you to wring every last RPM out of its engine.. and IIRC its shorter geared too.. it also feels better when cornering.. more nimble on its feet compared to the ST which has a definate initial reluctance to turn in due to the heavy engine

This link (if it works) may be of interest. It suggests, in my view that in the real world and given a reasonable ability to use the right gear at the right time there's going to be little in it. The differences in performance can more than be eroded just by traffic conditions. Although one thing in the VRS' favour is that it seems it has better braking ability. Anyway hope the link works: Hot properties - Yahoo! Cars
