New Octavia VRs TFSI or Focus ST-3 ???

Featured Replies

I should have the finances arranged by january to purchase my new car but I'm having terrible trouble deciding between an Octavia VRs TFSI or a Focus ST-3, the ST is faster and I love it but I spent a lot of time looking at the VRS at the motorshow in Paris and liked it, the inside was really nice.

What do you think I should choose and why ?

I'd be looking at a full spec octavia, what deals did ou get from your dealerships ? MY local in sheffield didn't seem to want to knock anything off which isn't going to get him a sale.

What changes are there on the 07 model ?

Thanks,

LWCARAB

The 07 model has been produced for a few months now and is what the spec sheet is for already.

The focus is a nice car, but is quiet a bit smaller than the octy.

4 cylinders = good, 5 cylinders = better. :)

Had the Focus been a bigger car I would have probably bought one.

Depends... Octy is bigger and better built..

The Focus goes better (only slightly) and sounds better but is v v v thirsty.. youll struggle to get over high 20mpg whilst the octy can hit 40mpg on a run

I'm just a student so space isn't a major issue. The octavia is quite a bit cheaper, its just that extra second to 60 seems a lot even though is probably isn't that noticable.

It's probably not noticeable. Quoting 0-60 times is, IMHO, a complete waste of time. To achieve some of the quoted figures you have to abuse your car :thumbdwn::thumbdwn:

Midrange in gear times are more of a reflection of the real world :D:D

The Focus no doubt sounds great - but look at the consumption :(:(

I would of had the focus over the Octy, reason I didn't;

1. Mine is a company car, tax is less on the Octy

2. I had to pay a contribution to get the focus

3. Have two small children, need biggest boot possible.

Glad your spending the student loan wisely, I mean books, pahhh!

It depends what you want from the car and how much you're prepared to spend on running costs.

IMHO the Focus is a cracking car but they drink fuel. I spent some time researching as I was thinking of getting one. As has previously been said you'll be lucky to get much more than 20 per gallon and the Octy is much more spacious.

Also there's a long lead time on the Focus if you decide to go for one.

For me, if money was no object I'd go for the ST3 in Orange:thumbup: Ultimately the Octavia would be more practical though!

Practical and Exciting - surely not!!

Personally I would have the Golf GTi above both the ST and the VRs if practicality wasn't an issue, i.e. if I was wanting a Focus sized car I would get the Golf.

The ST is quicker, albeit slightly, than both the GTi and the VRs but as pointed out already it is a lot more thirsty.

Regarding the 0 - 60 time, for what it's worth, the official VRs quoted time of 7.3 is more than any road test I have ever seen. It's usually 6.9 - 7.0ish.

Check on delivery times for the Focus...

Yeah, delivery is 4 months on the focus, but I've been told 3 months on the vrs.

Not a fan of the gti, a bit boring I find, sure its nice to drive tho and a bit expensive.

Is fuel that bad on the focus ? I've read that 20 is average if u push it but cruising in 6th gets 35

Consider going for a test drive in a Mazda6 MPS before you make your choice.

  you'll be lucky to get near that figure , maybe if the road was downhill for 50 miles and the wind was behind you

the only really nice thing about the Focus is the engine note , Mmmm 5 cylinders

A Guy at work has got a Focus and looks well. He has had it vandalised 3 times...

also the Focus is slightly , dare i say it ch#vvy

focus is better looking, faster, better handling, an ST-3 i think is higher spec'd than either a normal gti or vRS and if you shop about no more expensive than the octavia and noticebly cheaper than the golf.

the octavia is bigger and probably better on longer journies though, not sure on average mpg i'll have to check evo for their test car :)

i looked at the focus, octavia, astra and golf a little while ago. the golf was bad in every way for me, boring to drive, lifeless engine note and skittish on B roads. the octavia was better inside than the golf but seeing as skoda are shucking fight i never got a test drive despite 4 requests through 3 different mediums so can't comment on its performance/handling but the focus was a delight to listen to and handling was a lot more planted and predictable than the golf. astra never got a look in as my local dealer didn't have any to look at let alone drive :thumbdwn:

and no the focus isn't chavvy the octavia is too boring and bland as standard IMO

Thats a bit out of the price range.. theyre 24k new... and about 18k for a year old with 10-12k on it ;) - they also drink fuel, just as bad as the focus ;);)

What about the new Leon Cupra... released in Jan... fully loaded for a fiver under 20k and 240bhp...

Not a fan of mazdas, tried a mazda 6 a year ago and wasn't a patch on the fords.

The leon is very interesting, didn't know when it was released and if it is that price, I' interested, I got to turn the key and tempt my right foot in one at the motorshow and it was "very nice". I seem to be getting the feeling from everyone that the decision would be difficult for everyone if size didn't matter.

I haven't test driven either yet, I'm not convinced they'll even let me out in one, 20 yearo old student, french license ( I am 100% british so don't start on that point lol) and yet to drive a right hand drive except a jeep in a muddy field.
