make it 4wd

Featured Replies

Getting board of wheel spin. I want to make my furby 4 wheel drive. I know i can buy a 4wd car but it does not seem as fun.

What are my options? Whos will be the best to fit. I was thinkig of trying quatro system of a TT but hear they losse alot of power in the system.

Still bouncing the idea and would apreciat input.

The cost would be pretty scary, not sure if you could buy parts for it even (although with unlimited budget no doubt you could in principle).

An alternative worth considering would be to get a limited slip diff, like Peloquin (not sure if I spelled that correctly) or Quaife. Gives you far better traction compared to not having it, but it won't completely solve the problem for sure.

If you do go for the LSD option, get your clutch uprated at the same time, as it will save you a fortune in labour charges.

Jason (Devonutopia)'s your man for what you can and can't do with the Fabia. I think 4WD might be pushing it a bit though, unless you were thinking along the lines of Scrapheap Challenge. An LSD, a better set of tyres, an uprated clutch and bit of finesse with your right foot through 1st and 2nd might be about the best you could hope for, I'm afraid (no offence)

Unless you are like 'Devonutopia' or some others on here,

ie, It's all about the enjoyment of actually doing something that someone else has not.

I would look for another vehicle that is already closer to your requirements.

You could always get a Golf TDI 4Motion!

All permanent 4wd systems will have quite large losses due to having to drive twice as many wheels with the same power ;) Also remember that the Fabia was never designed to have 4wd so you'll probably need to do quite a bit of modifying to the floor pan too to accommodate the centre and rear diffs..... at the end of the day, it's gonna cost you a lot and going to make your car worthless ;)

If you want to keep the Fabia and want to reduce wheel spin you can do the following (in order of cost):

a) do some advanced driving courses

B) get some better, grippier tyres

c) uprate the springs and dampers to prevent the huge weight shift to the back wheels under acceleration

d) Quaife or equivalent LSD

Or if you just want 4wd go sell the Fabia and buy a Skyline, Scooby, Evo, S3, etc, etc

Chris

Indeed ;)

Another, cheaper option, is to just control the right-foot - once you're in the higher gears you can use it more heavily :)

JBS were asked if they could do a 4wd drive conversion to a Mk3 Ibiza. They intended to use a Haldex system as the gearbox from a haldex car would be compatible with the engine (as it would with the Fabia). However it's a very big job so would be very expensive, I would say at least £10k to pay them to do it, obviously alot less if you can do it yourself.

I have thought about a 4wd, but to be honest, I'm not going to bother with mine - ever. Even if I win the lottery I'll do it to some other car, not the mongrel.

To 4wd a fabia - you'd firstly have to replace the engine with a TDI engine (or a petrol) with the type of engine and box that powers 4wd. I'm guessing you'd need a 4x4 octy / 4motion engine, if you want to stick with diesel. Assuming the engine goes in the bonnet and can still drive the front wheels from the box position, the main challenge lies in getting drive to the back. Firstly the front suspension console is in the way - there might be enough room to get over the top of it. Then you can follow the exhaust column down the car, but after about 2/3, that tunnel takes a left, so to keep going straight on, it involves cutting some serious chassis out. Assuming you can get the prop to the back, next challenge is transplanting the rear diff/axle/shafts from the octavia/4motion, in order to stick to the same platform. Not sure how the rear axle comes off the Fabia, but it would be a big DIY job attaching (safely) the rear axle and diff to the back. The fabia is probably shorter, so the propshaft probably will need cutting a bit....

Finally, you'll have to re-route the exhaust out the side at the front, as the propshaft will be in the way of the oem route.

Tell I've thought about this a bit? noooooo.... ;)

Hehe why am I not surprised ;)

For the record I also looked into powering the rear wheels using electric motors, bit like a hybrid, which would increase the weight of the car again though :)

should be easy enough, find an excellent fabrication company like a WRC prep company. pay them around 40k and there you go a 4WD fabia

to do it you would need a new engine, gearbox, floor pan(or at least your current floor pan mated to the centre of a different floor pan), complete rear suspension setup and the turrets/archs to match grafted into the car, custom prop and custom drive shafts as everything would be too long for the car, all new hubs and suspension, steering rack i suspect, fuel tank, fuel pumps, wiring loom, brakes, all engine ancilarries like rad, coolant system etc etc.

basically everything other than interior and shell as it will all be different, then after spending your 40K you've got yourself a golf/s3/octavia 4WD :)

you can buy evo 2's etc for under 3k now mate just buy something like that if you want 4x4 :)

Have a little look here...

HPA Motorsports Inc. / AWD Conversions

Jason is kind of right but the floor pans of 2WD and 4WD are identical up to the front of the boot or there abouts. The exhaust is brought down on the four wheel drive vehicles and the prop runs in the regular tunnel. A saddle type fuel tank with twin pumps (one being a suction jet pump) goes over the prop etc and the exhaust doesnt do off to the side at all, stays straight under the rear axle next to the diff.

However remember the Fabia floor pan isnt the same as the MK4 Golf so it wont be a straight fit.

So nowhere near 40k GBP then, however still definitely not worth it IMHO. The LSD route is by far the most effective on the FWD cars, combined with good tyres & suspension :)

that doesn't mean a thing as its for a different car, just because thats possible on a car that was designed with a 4WD model in its range doesn't mean it will work on a car that was never intended to have 4WD.

best bet is to completely ignore that HPA stuff and go get a quote as i am pretty sure it will be very different.

that conversion takes 80hours for a company used to fitting a straight forward kit using standard parts, at the rates of a lot of uk tuners your looking at about £4000 fitting costs so considering there aren't any standard parts and that people don't know how its going to work then doubling that cost wouldn't be surprising. then all the custom parts required along with all the new parts needed like the gearbox, transfer box, rear diff, prop(that would have to be modified), drive shafts(that would also have to be modified), rear hubs(that wont fit the standard suspension) it will easily get very very expensive.

I didnt mean that is would be that 'simple', I was just trying to show that it took 80 hours like you say on a car that can be adapted with parts already produced.

Fair enough & it would be interesting for sure :D

Is there a 4x4 version of the Polo chassis as well? If so I'd imagine you'd be able to get a similar possibility for a 4x4 upgrade?

I'm not aware of a 4x4 polo. I think the same 4wd issues would apply there as well.

still thinking about it. some good suggestion

thanks.

This i want to see!!

Little update - there is a 4x4 polo-based car, it's called the Dune. That said it is probably quite different from the Furby ;)

indeed there is the polo dune but how high is it compared to the normal polo?

like a RWD new transit they have just raised the suspension and stuck the prop under the car so although yes you can have a 4x4 polo it looks like a monster truck!

Now THAT would be interesting :D

Now where are those large wheels, hehehehee :D

It would be one interesting project to follow, although there is zero chance of me doing it to my car, that's for sure :)

am i right in saying , the VW Dune is still only F/W/D so there is no gain in parts for a Fabia 4WD conversion

Hmm pretty sure it said 4x4 but either way, if this guy is going ahead with a conversion it will be pretty custom :)

been discussing with my technical support and they think we can do the needed cutting and welding for a tunnel and possibly other suspention parts. Definatly not looking to rais the car.

Who needs back seats. At this time of day i need a 2 seater. Going to have to find somewhere new for the fuel tank and spear wheel.

thinking s3 parts. will need to do round of breakers yards.

still looking to be pricey.

not sure where the tow ball will fit.
