Which car to buy? Argh!!! Wish I knew what I wanted!

The thing is, I've done the quick diesel thing (had a mapped Fabia vRS), but I'm really yearning for a car that is classy, refined when it wants to be, and a hooligan when I want to play! ;)

The Focus is a good car, but the seats lack support, and its feeling a touch dated now. Its no performance car - a good car nonetheless, but I really want to move up the automotive ladder as it were.

I love the new Octy vRS, I think the styling is great, the suspension is simply awesome - its like its a split personality. Lovely and comfy for munching up the miles, yet really sporty when stepping up the pace. I had the PD170 on demo for a whole day, and whilst I loved the car, when you want to enjoy yourself, it just feels too tame, a bit boring.

I know a petrol vRS would be an awesome car to own, if a little expensive. I'm sure it would be sooo worth it though. The diesel, in my current frame of mind, is simply a compromise. The Focus is a similar compromise, so why change for something that wont make me totally happy? If I want a nippy diesel, I see no point in changing, I've already got one

The car I pine for is the petrol vRS, so I think my only option is to keep the Focus for a bit longer, save like bonkers, and hopefully aim for a fully specced up red or silver vRS for 57 plate, 1st September... :)

I also agree with the Kleptomaniac. However, we are both going to be living at home for a while yet for us both to finish uni and get settled in jobs etc, so the way I see it is that if I dont do it now, I'll never be able to do it ;)

Oh, and she wants one too!

Keep the Focus, use the funds to go towards purchasing your first house and get on the property ladder. Sod wasting money on cars when you stil live at home. Then get the missus in with you and live it up.

He's living at home and spending 15k on a new car  Shame on you, Tom :P:D

Chris

You would be so let down by the handling of an Octy I after a focus, no matter what you did to it.

with that in mind fella can i ask this, how can you afford a, circa,

I doubt that. Octy Mk2s handle rather quite well tbh and after being in one recently with a few handling tweaks I was mighty impressed.

Now that's just not true! The Mk 1 Focus was a great handling car, but the Octy Mk1 vRS can put a massive grin on your face depending on how you drive it. They're different cars so will handle differently but the Focus aint all that.

with that in mind fella can i ask this, how can you afford a, circa, £15k car if you're in full-time education? and, no, i'am not being sarky.

regards.

He's doing what I'm doing, university part time and works in a related profession the rest of the time. Hard work but worth it.

i went from a mk1 focus to a mk1 octavia and although i missed the pin sharp handling at first since i have fitted coilovers and played with other area's i'd say it handles better than my focus did, not as fun though :o

I do over 2000 miles a month, and at 12mpg less than the diesel (rough guess) thats an extra

Not sure if the price of petrol is much cheaper. You have to run it on the good stuff for it to run at its potential, which is around 97p a litre IIRC.

i run mine on tesco 99 ron which is about 91p in oxford, don't know about elsewhere, diesel is around 96p here and regular is only about 88p

By me I'm paying 91.9 for diesel.

Super unleaded is 92.9 at best.

Also don't forget that though a diesel car costs more to buy in the first place you do get a good chunk of that back when you come to resell

Sod resale values and the like, I think I'll only be totally happy with the petrol vRS, so I'm just going to save methinks.

As for handling, the Focus is excellent, yes, but even the diesel Octy vRS was pretty darn good, certainly gripped as well even if it didn't feel as "pointy".

And Bengie, the "good stuff" is more expensive than diesel round here too... :(

workman - Yashicamat is correct, I am on day release. I work full time as a traffic engineer (designing things to slow you lot down  ) and also work part time at Tesco, so my wages are fairly respectable (over £20k), plus I'm getting my degree, albeit slower than I would if I'd done that full time.

Tom I've just done around 1750 miles at an average of 33 mpg overall. That is a mix of motorway and the Highlands of Scotland and not hanging about with a fully laden car.

Have you had insurance quotes for either? Mine is very cheap to insure.

Mine isn't!!!!!!!!!!

i see, fair play to you chum.

fwiw: petrol vrs, buy. i've driven this model and it's tip-top, not have a chance to punt around in the oil-burner vrs but have a relation that has used one for a week and he preferred the 140bhp tdi, thought the 170bhp was a bit 'peaky'.

Another highly intelligent comment Ian, I don't know where you are getting these suggestions from but I don't think you are all there mate! :thumbdwn:

Golf MKV u know it makes sense :P

If you have another 2.5k to spare. That amount could be saved towards insurance and runnings costs, or a nice little mod fund :)

Yeah but yours has independant rear suspension like the Focus, unlike the 2WD Octavia 1.
