Which car to buy? Argh!!! Wish I knew what I wanted!

Featured Replies

Well, it looks like my finances are now nice and settled, and now I'm much better at looking after my own money! :)

So, not that my Focus is a bad car, very good infact, but I know I can afford something better, and I REALLY love the vRS Octavia.

However, the car I pine for is a remapped 2.0TFSI, yet I couldn't stretch to running it. I really liked the PD170 vRS I demod for a few hours, a very competant car, but I can't help but thinking I'll end up wishing I'd gone for the petrol - but again, I really cant afford that. :thumbdwn:

So, I either keep the Focus or:

Buy a new Focus 2.0 TDCI Zetec climate with big wheels and spoiler - would cost peanuts in comparison to the alternatives, with it weighing in at under

I can get a UK one for £15,801 from drive the deal... its the fuel thats a problem, I do over 2000 miles a month, and at 12mpg less than the diesel (rough guess) thats an extra £80 a month on fuel...

Just a thought , but have you thought of a Mondeo ST TDCI?

6-9 month old ones are a very good buy

Hi Tom

I remember you getting the Corsa and then the Focus. From a guy who has had over 14 cars in as many years I would say keep the Focus as you have not had it long, its a diesel and save up for the Octavia.

I have driven many cars I have the Vrs Fabia and my friend has the Octavia MK2 Vrs Petrol. I have not driven the Octavia Vrs Diesel but by all accounts the engine is a bit of a disappointment, all or nothing. On the other hand the petrol Vrs is an absolute joy to drive and my friend who does not hang around gets around 35 mpg as an average, the diesel I would guess you would get around 45 mpg. Really is that extra 10mpg worth the extra

I can get a UK one for

Used Mk1?

You could chop the focus against one and not have to spend money. This you can put towards mk2.

You may lose a bit of money on the fuel front, but as an older model will have done most of their depreciating you might not lose as much money as you will in waiting on the focus in depreciation. Also by the time you are ready to move on from your mk1 the mk2s will be for sale on the used market.

why not an elegance/l&K with the 17" fitted. I ran a new 1.8 tdci focus for a year and ive now gone onto a 2.0 tdi and its a lot better. the 1.8 didnt feel like 115 bhp to me, it felt like a lot more when compared to a 110 peugeot 307 i had for a bit but they may just be geared differently. the 1.8 had loads of grunt after 2000 rpm but it went away quickly whereas with the 2.0 tdi the grunt stays until 4500 rpm.

i noticed you mentioned remapping the 2.0 tfsi so have you thought about remapping a 2.0tdi?

I'm sure I read somewhere that the gearbox fitted to the 2.0tdi's is limited to 350Nm and seeing at the standard PD140 produces 330Nm, a remap would take it well over the limit and into the realm of possible major bills?

:iagree:

Although the MkI Octy vRS is not as capable a car as the MkII vRS they are a damn sight better than most other cars out there for the money.

As for fuel consumption - if driven normally I can get an average of around 32mpg on a mix of town and A roads / motorway driving. If you drive it like you stole it, expect to have to rob the odd bank or two to pay for the fuel bills  (the worst I have achieved is an average of 22mpg over about 200 miles or so - on a Briskoda meet naturally  )

As you are no doubt aware, there are many bits and pieces you can attach to the MkI for extra performance and noise ;)

That was the DSG box rather than the manual wasn't it?

Oh was it? Ah-ha . . . if that is confirmed I might start contemplating . . .;)

erm...keep your current Focus until you can afford to run the FRS that you really pine for...;)

Nope it's 350nm for the revised 02J (I think it is called the 02J anyway - Don't have my stuff here at the moment) as fitted to the Octy II.

At 2000 miles a month I would be inclined to go for the diesel, unless all those miles are done on deserted B roads I don't think you will get your moneys worth out of the petrol vRS.

How would you compare the focus to the Octavia?

much nicer although i wnet from an LX new focus to an Octy II L&K so obviously the trim levels are a lot better. overall i much prefer the octavia, i did look at another focus ( i was coming off a company car scheme onto a cash scheme) but to me even the top trim levels didnt werent as good as the elegance or L&K. from the brochure the climatronic was an option on all models although they might have changed this now. The boots a lot bigger too which was important to me. the focus did feel lighter to drive, the octavia is heavier but much more fun :)

Tom my dear chap, you know what you are going to do just by the very fact you have posted this thread. There are three steps you must now follow:-

Step 1

Go to your local dealers tomorrow to do the deal and get one IMMEDIATELY (your Focus will have depreciate like a stone in a year!!).

Step 2

Hold out for the remap for a while, that way you can enjoy 35mpg motoring and justify your purchase. Get it with a remap straight away and you'll be lucky to get 30 mpg as the performance is intoxicating and addictive!!.

Step 3

Enjoy your new found poularity, women will throw themselves at your feet and promotion at work is guaranteed to fund your extravagance

See, it's an easy decision when it's explained properly!!. :D

Tom...I have been there, done that, remember ....more fuel....higher insurance....and to be honest not that much more fun .........if you must have a VRS try the diesel for a longer period see if you can live with it....or get a pd140 ...either L&K or elegance with a sports pack and you will end up with more toys as well

What was it exactly that would disappoint you about the diesel vRS or TDI?

Remove the engine note from the equation and what are you left with?

An engine that is so reliable, tune-able and indestructable, it makes granite look like filo pastry.

I drive the remapped pd130 (granted in the big ol' barge), and yes, on cold starts it sounds louder and rougher than a clapped out transit.......but.....

50mpg+ on a run, average of 43mpg.........

Massive amounts of torque to make overtaking etc scary in the wet.

Add on some sports suspension that makes TVR's, Porsches and Caterhams feel pliant and will assure you a lifetime of spinal problems.......

Could surprise even yourself and pick up nice GT TDI 150 Golf for about 8k......

third car down - ignore the usual trashy wood trim on dash - easy to source alloy/silver effect ones to replace.

Or how about a 2-3 year old ST220 and put the money you save towards petrol :D Will knock spots off the Mk1 Octy vRS ;)

Chris

I paid just under

Keep the Focus, use the funds to go towards purchasing your first house and get on the property ladder. Sod wasting money on cars when you stil live at home. Then get the missus in with you and live it up.

Noooooooo way, are you totally deranged!!!!, plenty of time in your life to get brainwashed/browbashed by a woman + she would'nt let you have one when your older.

I do about 2000 miles per month. I had a corsa and it killed my back. Went for the 1.9 pd octavia 2 elegance with 17" alloys and its been an absolute dream. driving like a mad mad man you will not get the 45+ mpg but at a steady 65-70 you will.

I doubt you would see that on any petrol car.

P.S. this was my first deisel and I would not return to a petrol unless I was doing small miles.
