Tdi VRS to pull horse box

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Have been giving serious thought to getting the diesel VRS, whats stopping me is that my g/f and I have horses and I dont want to buy a boring 4x4. So i believe that the pulling power of this would be more than enough and then I will still have a nice little run around when I want my little boy racer side to come out. I will eventually get an old 4x4 commerical but will a diesel vrs with a hitch look a bit silly.

I would get a PD140 Octy (elegance or something) for towing to be honest, the PD170 in the VRS is IMHO too brutal with it's power delivery to be a regular tow car.

You can get removable tow hitches, whether these are suitable for the vRS you'd have to ask your dealer.

I have a removable Skoda towbar fitted to my RS. No cutting of the bumper required and its totally invisible when removed. Do a search on here for pics.

get the vrs, just think of the extra horse power

sorry. someone was bound to say something like that.

What about the Octi 4x4?

Didn't the 4x4 win 'What Tin Tent' tow car of the year or something??

Seem to remember my Dad mentioning it a while ago.

Isn't the Octy tow limit only 1400Kg? Asuming you have a fairly standard double box, that'll be around the 900Kg mark (our Richardsone is, and the Ifors are about the same), and a moderate size mule, say mid build 15-2 to 16h, than thats going to be around the 400 mark (again had out 16-2 welsh tb cross weighed recently at around 500Kg), plus some tack, and your right on the limit with one horse. If you want to pull without a 4x4, the best option IMO is to get an A4, which has an 1800Kg limit IIRC. We nearly got one to do the same job, but got a Navara pickup instead, and boring it aint!

Yes, the Octy 1 (my version) 4x4 certainly did

I suspect the 2.0TDI 4x4 would be more suited to towing than the VRS

It is....

I would be looking at the 2.0TDI 4x4 if you still want an Octy and then remap it!

It's not the bhp you need it's the torque ....and basically the tdi vrs is a remapped pd 140 ....with a few extra bits and lower, stiffer suspension....expect it to get high up in the next towcar ratings :)

With a remapped 4x4 you'll see more torque too!

Hey Guys

thanks for all the replys. I have just come back from my local dealer to have a spin in one. Unlucky for me the diesel one is sold so I couldnt drive it. I got a spin instead in the petrol one. Pretty sweet. on the test drive it was a long straight single road and I came across a boy racer in his little jap import hot mini thingy and I asked the sales guy can I overtake to get a feel of the power and he said sure whilst gripping the door handle.

Anyway, I currently have a octavia tdi laurin and klement (2001 black) which pulls the current double horsebox with a 16.2h horse no probs....I have a diesel tuning box from dragon fitted to it so its got a little more grunt than the standard 110bhp.

I dont tend to pull a hell of a lot as we have our own stables and field so its just to competitions at the weekends so I still would love to get the diesel vrs with the detactable towbar..

P.S. just as I was leaving some guy was there picking up his red diesel vrs, pretty sweet smile on his face when they drove it out. He was trading in an alfa 146 2001.

was a bit jealous of him actually.

cheers

If you are happy with just towing one horse and not bothered about 4x4 I reckon it should be fine, only thing is it will probably be worse on the clutch due to higher amounts of tourque. Also if you have to set of up hills you could find it a little prone to wheel spin (although im sure the computer will do its best to sop this).

How about the new Octavia Scout;

Hey mdk1, thats a nice looking motor...when is that going on sale?

Although power/torque will obviously make life easier towing, the safe towing limit is determined by the vehicle mass and breaking capacity. These will affect stability at speed and braking distance (obviously!). Towing more than the specified limit is a crime, and will invalidate your insurance, although you are unlikely to ever be weighed.

If you donkey and trailer are below the limit though, then for infrequent and shorter journeys I can't see any problems with the Octy, in fact when we finally find the right car, it may get used for emergency trips. Towing something that heavy with a 4X4 though is a totally different experience, and so much easier, its just a ball ache living with the higher cost and size of a big 4x4!

Cheers thanks for that. the trips we do to shows are never more than 1hr drive and its not every weekend.

Just phoned my local skoda dealer (in Ireland) and he said they wont have the scout till at least March...on the price he told me the diesel would start at 36,000 euro.....
