uprated shocks, which ones? for Octy vRS

Featured Replies

Afternoon all, just wondering has anyone just uprated shocks, rather than a the reccomended KW coliover route, reason is , here in ireland the possibility of popping a damper on a pothole is a daily threat, which is why the coilovers would be wasted... im not looking to lower either because speed ramps are already an issue. I just want to control the body a bit more, rebound (i think, can anyone explain the terms) seems to be way off on standard vRS setup.

I know the rear konis have problems, how do teh KW dampers rate?

thanks in advance

Cheers

Fergal

Word of warning, if you only adjust rebound then you can end up with excessive skitter which will cause loss of grip and seriously increased braking distance on a bumpy/uneven road surface.

I see your point, but I feel the standard vRS is underdamped, is that right?, seems to get caught out over bumps or undulations. Compared to my previous Impreza (standard suspension) it just doenst seem to have as much control over the body. seems to pitch more?

Cheers

I've never driven an Impreza so I cannot compare the two.

I have never had a problem with bumps and speed, the car always feels settled and controlled with some body roll.

Does you car have a sunroof per chance?

Know what you mean....over broken surfaces and undulating roads my RS bumps and floats. I don't have a sunroof.

Unfortunately I don't enough about suspension to help. Best to consult the Master Jedi...Obi Wan French (TaviaRS) ......he can feel movements in the Force and will know what to do. ;)

nah no sunroof, I think its a VAG thing, my dads 99 Golf tdi feels the same, granted the vRS has a firmer more controlled ride but the pitching is still there... have to say the vRS compare very well to my Scoob, obviously traction is an issue but high speed cornering is very close... as with most factory cars they are setup for comprimise, I reckon the Skud just needs some minor tweaks to make it shine, but as ive siad the coliovers are little too expsensive/over kill for what will be a consumable here in Ireland...

so can anyone reccomend a decent replacement damper setup, that either doesnt lower or at least not Max power (wheres me sump) low, that can handle city streets and speed bumps, without chiropracter bills & improves body control

Cheers

edited bcos me spellin is diabollicle ;):D

Yup, try and get hold of a set of dampers off one of the WRC edition RSs. Seem to have better damping control, plus they are standard Skoda bits of kit so won't frighten your dealer :D

I'll see if I can get a part number for you.

Don't Koni or Bilstein do uprated Dampers for the Octavia??

If they do then I would put them on with the standard springs......

This would tighten the car up......

That seems like a good plan. My local VAG specialist' date=' Star Performance suggested that the best upgrade for my Golf GT TDI would be Bilsteins on the standard springs. However, I got an excellent deal elsewhere on a Bilstein PPS9 kit.

I don't think that the roads in Ireland can be much worse than the Scottish B roads that I regularly hammer over. In fact that was one reason for buying the Billys, since I reckoned they would be the most robust. I've also fitted a Sparco strut brace and an Audi S3 lower strut brace.....I assume you can also do this on the Octavia, since it shares the Golf floorpan.....and in conjunction with the coil-over kit (although this is a bit of a misnomer on a Golf) they've made the front end of the car feel much more solid and planted.

Excellent taviaRS that would be great, thanks :D i reckon i'll defo need the part number... cheers

koni do dampers for the OCty, but they seem to blowing the rears due to the octys heavier ass! ;) unusually for koni they seem to have taken the easy option and developed the shocks for the VAG golf platform rather than tuning to each application maybe?

I emailed Skoda ireland :(

Hi Fergal

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail us. Unfortunately there is no genuine Skoda upgraded Suspension available for

the Octavia RS.

The Octavia RS W.R.C Ltd edition was also available in Ireland, how ever the differences between this car and the standard

Octavia RS were mainly cosmetic and both cars used the same suspension.

Hope this information is of some assistance to you.

Dear William Lee

Bolleaux! The WRC uses different rated dampers to the standard vRS. This is readily apparent on track and in fast road use.

TaviaRS

:D

Dear Jon, didn't anyone tell you black ones don't handle as well :D

Strangely enough, the WRC edition does have different damper rates to the "normal" RS, or appears to. It was never mentioned in the literature or in the spec sheets but they do handle differently, the wrc one seems much tauter.

Maybe you could get a comparison at the Briskoda Trackday? Std, WRC, KW1, KW2, KW3, Koni, H&R?

The dealer I got my RS from had a WRC Edition and said it had different suspension.

 Can anyone get part numbers for the standard vRS shocks and the WRC vRS, easiest way to know I suppose if they have different numbers?

would be great if it was, nice easy upgrade :D there was no extra bracing on the WRC was there?

hi again guys, sorry im like a dog with a bone on this, only reason being it would be a very handy upgrade... I emailed Skoda themselves to see about this and this is the repy I got...

thank you for your email and for your interest in our brand especially.

Concerning your request I have consulted it directly with the chassis

specialist and I was told that the chassis - suspension in the Skoda

RS WRC (limited edition of 100 cars) is the same as in the standard

Octavia RS car.

I would like to mention that only the real Skoda Octavia WRC has

got the different suspension and modified chassis which are of

course superior to the standard RS model.

What extras were on the WRC? could the wing have added downforce, do the Xenons (sp) weigh more, could the combnation make for a better handling car?

Cheers

Fergal

ps: skoda UK have yet to reply...

Don't know, but there is certainly a difference when driving, unless there are different springs on the WRC. Anyone with a WRC want to look at the coloured dots on their springs?

  • Author

Hi Tav, thx again, I havent driven a WRC and dont doubt your observations for a minute, I know you have driven many track cars and tuned skoda and are more than qualified to notice the differences... just wondering why such a noticable improvement with no obvious difference in spec... As there were only 100 made. could manufacturing tolerance have been better with the WRC?!

Any Skoda mechanics/dealers reading this care to offer a suggestion ;)

Cheers

Thank you for your email.

I can confirm that the suspension on the Octavia vRS and the Octavia WRC differs. It is possible to convert an Octavia vRS to an Octavia WRC, however, this is a costly process. As all the body trim is made of a special lightweight material, one could expect the cost of the body-kit alone to be in excess of

Wonder if it'll fit a SDI estate :D

well here's the reply from Skoda UK ;) looks like the ltd edition is the same as the vRS :(

Thank you for your email and further explanation of your requirements.

I have spoken to our Parts Department regarding this matter. The suspension system that was used on the Octavia Rally Limited edition models is actually identical to that used on the Octavia vRS.

Should you wish to discuss the matter with me, please contact me on telephone number 0845 XXXX XX.

Yours sincerely,

As an aside do we have any serving police officers on Briskoda? I wonder if the polices spec is uprated?!?!

Cheers

Fergal

ps: what do peeps thing of a set of billies, just plain oul gas?

We have several' date=' Maverick might just be the guy to answer this, or perhaps Gash?

It could be my eyesight, but having seen a Cleveland Police Octy RS in full flight recently, it certainly [b']looked[/b] lower than mine, but i have also been told they are left standard...

:rubchin:

Looked lower... possibly cos it carries around 100s of kilos of equipment?

Q, it looked a fair bit lower actually, even taking the extra kit into account.
