Certainly seems that way Alex.

To be totally honest I bet its for less than a mile every thousand that I even go above an indicated 80.

As a serving Plod I can't say what speed I have done on public roads in my own car, I of course only ever stick to the speed limits and I only bought my VRS Octy MkII because I liked the Race Blue colour, and couldn't get it in any other model (!).

But in the course of my work I have driven well into three figures in various patrol cars( not traffic cars, I have no aspirations to be a traffic cop ) , mainly Vauxhalls,

It's surprising just how quick the MkIV 1600cc Astras were, and they handled brilliantly.

I also occassionaly touch over 100 in a Sprinter van ( LWB Public Order Van - much bigger engine than usual police vans, and uprated brakes/suspension).

Tripped a speed camera in a 30 zone at 94 mph in early hours of morning once on way to assist colleague who was getting badly assaulted ( and it wasn't one in an urban area, it was one of those ones that was sited about half a mile from the nearest habitation ), that was in a marked Zafira 1800cc.

Was driven at 160mph on M62 by colleague in a traffic Volvo, and was scared to death.

This was I hasten to add part of a legitimate incident, and again at three o clock in the morning.

At that speed it was amazing how the gentle sweeping bends on the motorway that you don't notice at 70 mph become quite tight bends, and the whole carriageway width is needed to negotiate them.

I have nothing but admiration for the skill that most of the lads and lasses of the Traffic departments have, and before anyone else says it, yes there are exceptions, I have worked with a few !

I have also seen the aftermaths of speed related collisions, and although driving quick is great fun, I have seen too many people cut out of cars, and knocked solemnly on too many doors to give "the news" to take silly risks any more.

I tend to leave my "spirited driving" to the drive home when I finish at two and three AM, and the quiet A and B roads on the way home are pretty much mine and mine alone. !

120 MPH in my 1.4 Fabia 3 days ago on an open highway.. I was surprised that it got there though.. been a passenger in a chipped M5 doin +260 Km/h...

210 mph in a wheel barrow

well it felt that fast

186 MPH felt fast on the IOM (bike).

120something on an unfaired bike feels pretty rapid

I'm exactly the same.

On my journey to work I'll sometimes pop up to an indicated 90 for an overtake but then drop back to my usual 78mph cruising speeds.

On lower limited roads it's a similar pattern which most of my driving being within 10mph of the limit.

1xx is an unusual speed in the car - a bit less so on the bike but again it's only for short bursts where safe (from accident and prosecution) to do so

On the motorway usually betweem 80-90, I dont speed on NSL or in town as its usually not needed.

The autobahn is a different beast. I had the MK1 vRS off the speedo (160MPH indicated and still pulling). The Boxster was scary at speed, did 150MPH in that with the roof down, the car wasnt pulling to well because of the extra drag caused by the wind deflector. Have yet to try the Octavia on the autobahn, but the best honor must go to my old trusty mondeo. Between Bonn and Cologne managed to get an indicated 125MPH, 2 weeks later the gearbox broke though.

160+ Didn't really feel like it. (And I do actually drive a Fabia ;))

I never speed in 30 mph zones, built up ares etc, and if i do, it's not by much. Country lanes on the other hand, with good visibility..........and deserted "autobahns".

150 + a couple times, not the Skoda though. I do drive to work everyday at 130 or so.

Done 140+ in a 911 but not as fast as my mate who done an indicated 180 on his hayabusa! Mad. . .

:iagree: , same here mate.

There is a short

taken whilst on the autobahn earlier this year in an OctyII vRS with a GPS verified 160mph, dunno who's driving though! ;) , (go to 3:05 minutes in for the speed bit  )

Still don't fancy my chances but I won't make matters worse (I got the ticket) clocked at 105. Won't admit to higher speeds than that on the public road :P

I have [snip] knocked solemnly on too many doors to give "the news" to take silly risks any more.

That has to be a grim, grim duty. I am not sure I could do it.

Not last year , but I had my Evo II 'off the clock' on a 3 lane private test track in 2004 , bearing in mind it was an import and the speedo ran out at 115 mph , id guestimate i was doing maybe 10 mph more than this , but still got 'owned' by a Lexus LS400 , probably due to gearing.

Give us a local backroad or forest track and il hit 90 no bother with trees and pillars a few feet away, I pussyed out at 65 on sheet ice last winter on the back road. :o

Im always to scared to go over 100. A little angel appears and chants BAN, BAN, BAN, BAN. Whilst a little devil says in an arnie voice "DO IT".

Oh! and the GF is screwing between 90 and 100. And thats enough to make me slow down.

A 'friend' of mine has once tested the top speed of a car of 'identical spec to my own Octy' - it got very close to the claimed figures - 148 indicated I seem to recall 'him' saying ;) :P

OK, so I should have read the poll description first

Fastest - 120 in an Impreza (slowed down eventually as it wasn't seriously different from doing 100(ish) and I didn't want to blow anything up by pushing on to higher speeds.

Scariest - 85! In a Triumph Dolomite 1300 with bad engine tune, soft suspension and badly out of balance wheels. I think the steering wheel was oscillating through about 3-4" circles whilst I tried to keep the car on the road. (PS: I was 18-19 and it was Mum's car :o )

J.

210 mph in a Veyron - and then I woke up.

Scaredy cat - wanna keep license ( I am somewhat licentious), just over 100 in old Cavalier 1.7TD some 6-7 years ago. Don't do the distance motoring nowadays.

Last year nothing too fast, but when I had my second Impreza (slightly tweaked) I got it off the clock which stops at 160mph. All very safe etc........

indicated speed 150 (in a liveried police vehicle)

275km/h indicated in a 350Z.

if theres an empty motorway, I always put my foot down, I don't realise how fast my VRS is:D came off a sliproad once at 115 mph oops won't do it again:eek:

someone tells me they once did 136mph in a Calibra on M5, very scary

Have hit 120 gps quite a few times on a long straight back road to work and also regulary on an "A" road near me - not had the bottle to get any faster on the roads and more worried about my license these days to try it any faster  . (Would love to know if it will do 146 as the book says though:D )

Devonutopia's stomping ground used to be my testing track on the dual carriageway towards junction 27 - maxed out both my last two cars (escort and fiesta sport) at over 120 but without gps so probably not quite that fast! - May have to try that section again next time I do a club night and come home at 5am
