New Car

Well I went up to get the car and saw a lovely BMW 120D for the same money, but 6 months older :D:D

As for the fords, they have now dropped the prices and 06 plate mondeo titanium X hatchbacks are now selling at £10'699.

Pretty good buy tbh if you are intending to keep the car until it dies, as it will deprciate a fair bit IMHO when the new model comes out later this year.

Yep - if you buy cheap, you'll end up selling cheap. Pretty straightforward really if you think in those terms :)

A hell of a lot of car for 10.7k that Mondy Titanium...

Steve

Quite the reverse, by your figures:-

Mondeo - Paid new 16.6 / sticker price 26 = 65% residual on taking delivery.

Octy - Used price after 4 years 6800 / sticker price 14000 = 48%.

Unless you can show it to lose under

Anyhow, did you do the sensible thing and buy that 120D instead?

JJ, I think you're completely missing my point, which is about comparitive depreciation, not absolute depreciation, and requires a known start point. I've explicitly said that I don't have the price paid new for my Octy at least once!

Oh and as for "high depreciation", the other car I seriously considered (until I realised that I didn't fit it and couldn't see the bonnet when I was driving it) was a Citroen C5 HDi110 same age and with pretty much the same trim spec as the Octy, but priced at just under £5_000. However you cut it, unless the guy who bought it new paid under 10k, that is barking depreciation!

No, I was trying to compare actual depreciation between 2 knowable figures. For you to achieve the same depreciation on the Mondeo wrt the list price over 3.5 years as my Octy actually achieved over the last 3.5, requires you to drop not much over £3_500 in the next 3.5 years, or are you claiming that you could sell the Mondeo privately now for more than you paid for it?

Suffice to say no I didn't get the 120D as the insurance quote was truly a scary prospect.

That plus i like the Octy II, the truely awful interior finish on the focus, and the soon to be released all new mondeo, means that I got an Octy.

Anyway, The 06 fords are now selling for less than the 6 month older skodas, so either way both cars depreciate, and when all is said and done, a care is a money pit and you will never win from buying a car.

Amen to that!!
