Most of the cars I can find are out of my price range, so i'm thinking of giving up driving until i can afford a newer safe car.

Are you ruling out a Mondeo or Focus then? Seemed to me the ones I came across would do the job nicely.

Nope but when i was looking at a ford the focus 2.0tdci is expensive and not much cheaper than the octy.

Most of the car supermarkets seem to be empty at the moment,which is annoying to say the least.

Agreed, couldn't find any reasonably priced Focus Mk2s, in 2.0 TDCI guise.

What are your thoughts on the Mondeo?

The Mazda 6 is a nice car and you can pick these up for good money full loaded.

Mondeo, I'm not sure.

I do think it looks a bit dated, and tbh while they are a bit cheaper they are not massively cheaper. When the new mondy comes out I assume their prices would fall through the floor, which would be ideal if i was buying then, but not if i wish to keep a car and sell it in 2 /3 years.

It came down to the following cars:

35k on an ex-hire? The last hire car I had (Octy TDi90 Ambiante) was almost due off hire, having done about 11_800, and the company staff commented to me that it had done a fair old mileage to still be on the fleet.

This kinda proves something I've been saying for a long time-

Skoda's do not hold there value.

No matter what you guys would like to hear, or believe your cars are worth, in the real world of buying and selling cars, Skodas are worth less than most mainstream makes.

And, if you're buying second-hand, the problem is?

I buy and sell lots of cars in my business, and although you guys dont want to hear it, I've been saying it for ages, you wont get anything like what you think it's worth when you trade it in/sell it.

Yes it does make a second hand skoda seem an attractive purchase, but people have to buy them new in the first place, and when that stops happening because of the very poor residual values and over inflated purchase prices, there wont be many left to buy!

The list price of the Titanium X is quite a bit higher than that of the Elegance without leather.

Also the Tit X was an estate and these hold their price better especially when dervs.

I could have also mentioned the 55 plate ghia mondeo for £9k, but IMHO that looked rough as f**k for a 25k mile car. It was odd as after hunting very hard over all the supermarkets and other dealers it was usually the octy that cost the most, very closely followed by the focus and the mondeo was the cheapest by a good margin.

I would say that the Octy II lost about 6k in a year and the Mondeo lost about 7k off list prices, but what you actually buy the new car for is the point and both get discounts new. I skipped the mondeo partly because a new one is out in a few months so the value of the current one will bomb pretty hard soon I would think

Please bear in mind these are not main dealer prices as one main dealer was asking 16k for an ambiente 2.0 TDI Octy, which I would guess won't sell any time soon.

All cars bomb out over the first year, and IMHO it is what happens over years 2,3 and 4 that really counts for somebody buying used.

Anyway... if you want bad, you should have seen what the astra and vectras were selling for lol.

Puuur, the volvos are nice :D. I love the C30, if only i could afford one with a D5 engine :)

I hunted through the Ford / Vauxhall / VW / Toyota, name a mainstream brand and i've been on their website. There was nothing RRP wise that compared to the size and equipment that I get in my Octavia. Citroen came close but I really couldn't bear to drive a C5.

I'm not a fanboy in any respect, my next car could be anything (it's likely to be a vRS, L&K or Scout mind :) ) But Skoda was the best I could find to spend my 17k on one and a half years ago. Granted it's a company car so residuals didn't effect my decision.

I guess 'business'is the operative word here. On list price the Fords seem more expensive but Ford also seem very much geared towards selling to businesses. Skoda less so. Your experience may be different from others here as they will be private buyers who don't have your negotiating power/experience to bring the price down to 'Skoda' levels.

But if you go into a Ford showroom and start to haggle, you can get a lot off the majority of their cars and various extras thrown in. The only exception I've found to this seems to be the Focus ST.....

Yep, list price for my mondeo ST tdci when specced up was 26K believe it or not.

And that was a private sale, not a fleet purchase. anyone can get that. never pay list price for anything.

I dont know where you've been looking but you can get virtually any current saloon car for 17k?

So, if you compare list price with actual, the Mundaneo has suffered 35% depreciation before it even got off the forecourt. Compare that with my Octy, which is still guiding at about 50% of new price after 4 years.

So the Mondeo has fared much better then by your calculations?

If you think your 4 year old Octy is still worth 50% of it's cost when new, your in for a bit of shock come trade in time I'm afraid.

Depriciation is calculated from the vehicles actual price, not what it's list price is BTW.

How is it that you can claim your car is 50% worth it's original value of four years ago when once stepping out of the showroom you lose about 25% on that value, and then from the forth coming years about 10% each?

Quite the reverse, by your figures:-

Mondeo - Paid new 16.6 / sticker price 26 = 65% residual on taking delivery.

Octy - Used price after 4 years 6800 / sticker price 14000 = 48%.

Unless you can show it to lose under £3600 in 4 years the Mondeo loses. I can't recalculate the Octy on actual price paid new cos I don't have one.
