Accelaration

Featured Replies

hi i think this could be difficult to answer, but hear goes !!! what should a standard octy 180bhp vrs feel like while accelaraiting, mine feel's nice and smooth but i thought it would have give me a bit more of a kick in the back, but i suppose i'm just use to a smaller car or a scooby ( you know what it's like when you have a new car !!!!!!!) :)

It really depends how hard you drive it...

Monkey, I know how you feel. As I first got behind the wheel to test drive mine, I was told it was also chipped (re-mapped) and I expected the kick in the back, however, what I got was smothe, sophisticated, refined power delivery - which in all fairness did not "feel" as though it was scary fast, but looking at the speedo and seeing it gliding through 120, when you feel like your doing about 60/70 is a good thing

but a bad thing if you want to keep your license ;)

i'm talking foot to the floor to about 6,000rpm ish, what's the best rpm to take it to when gunning it by the way

Damn it, did i forget to mention "on a private road" silly me

i know exactly what you mean dan its so smooth

It should pull cleanly and with even power up to the red line. You have a rev limiter to avoid causing damage to the engine.

Again, how you want to drive it is up to you, depends how mad you want to be, but as long as you have an adequate oil, no damage will be caused by full revs

have you tried blipping the throttle in between gear changes to keep the turbo spooled up i think this only works on cars with bigger turbo's

I find the most noticeable "kick" to be around 3500 - 4000 rpm in say second when holding around that waiting to overtake. Then when I stamp on the loud pedal it takes off quite quickly  , needs a gearchange pretty soon (at around 65 mph on the gps  ) and is usually well over the ton before I realise it!

The car is extremely smooth on the power delivery but it's all deceptive cos one look at the speedo will confirm you are doing silly speeds without realising it.

I must say that after 4 months of ownership I'm pretty used to the power under acceleration but it still never fails to make me smile at how quick it does shift through the revs / gears.

Would love to see what difference a bit of laptop tinkering would make but I doubt I'd ever get the all important swmbo approval to spend

Monkey, I know how you feel.

Me too. When I test drove one for the first time, I was wondering what all the fuss was about. I guess it is the way the power is delivered, very linear and apart form the initial turbo lag, there isn't much difference in delivery right up to the red line.

There isn't even much noise to make you feel like you are traveling at speed either. The only indication is when people in your rear view mirror get very small very quickly or people in your windscreen get closer faster than you anticipated.

I still don't think it is the mental speed machine it has a reputation for being, but I do love mine and think it is one of the best all-rounders out there.

nice one matt !!!!! i would love to try a remap myself !!what is swmbo

Yeah its nippy but Im hoping a remap will take it to 'quick'

Extra 40bhp and 60-70lbft torque?

Yes please!

my thought's exactly skinnyman might invest in an air filter /induction kit to make it sound fast too !!!!!!

  • Author

my mini was nippy!!!! the octy is quick just not ballastic

  • Author

oh poo!!!! just realised i spelt acceleration wrong !!!

Also get a sealed induction kit at least! None of these open cones. Probably end up losing power.

only if the cone stays in teh engine bay as it will be sucking hot air in, the induction kits where the cone sits in the wing should be fine :)

i like to think of mine as a great GT car in that one moment it can be nuts driving down a country lane. the next it can be a very sophisticated executive estate car that I can drive from one end of the cournty to the other without any worry or feeling that i have driven lots of miles in a quick and safe mannor!
