xbox360 scratching games?

Featured Replies

my son got an xbox 360 from Santa, and I know of 2 people who had also got them and some of their games have been "scratched by the machine" and now they won't load up. One of them looks like it has a ring on it, has anyone encountered this problem?

my son's seems ok at the moment, but he does spend most of his time playing it "live", not sure if this makes any difference or not, I am not really sure how the xbox 360 operates:D

It was a known issue with some of the early machines (although M$ claimed it was user error). Later machines "should" be ok.

oooo, don't sound too good. I'l get my son to ask his friends how theirs are. Now these other 2 machines that are doing it were bought at Christmas and have ruined about 5 games, which now obviously cannot be traded in! My friend has been advised to ring Microsoft Customer Services, but not sure where they stand on this, would this be covered by guarantee?

Hope ours doesn't start to do this:eek:

You can get scratched discs replaced for a small charge by the game company, details are usually in the back of the user manual and will require you to return the original.

Im sure if the xbox scratches the disc, your console in covered under warranty.

Its best to have the console horizontal and not vertical to stop scratching until your console is exchanged or repaired to save scratching your discs.

so far, it hasn't happen to me, but I know 3 people who have bought 360s for Christmas and it has ruined games. One person said on xmas day they had it horizontal, but after that its been vertical and its still scratched a disc.

We have ours vertical, (we were told to after having it horizontal, it scratched a friends)

If mine starts doing it, I'll have a look at the guarantee and see if it covers it

Another tip. Always make sure the console is completely vertical or horizontal and never attempt to move the console when a game disk is in the dvd drive.

was about to add this. The only time I have heard of people scratching discs is when they ahave moved it from horizontal to vertical while the machine is on with a discs in it.

I have a fairly early console that has stayed in the horizontal since day one. I will check and report back but I'm not aware of any scratched disks.

On my console when i bought it was a warning no to move the console with a disk in the tray. This was right across the cd tray. From just having a quick look it seems to me like they might use a similar system to the original ps2's where the disk is actually suspended on a bed of air for it to spin.

I only found this when i had this problem with a real nasty mark on one of my games and when i returned it i was told that it was because it had been knocked whilst the disk was spining, which is quite possible and that obvioulsy the bed of air is not enough to support it during a sharp movement.

Ever since that i have always made sure that the machine is on a solid object to prevent it from rocking during play.

Checked my disks and found nothing. There seems to be lots of talk on the Xbox forums though. See here:-

It is usually because the xbox either isnt sat flat (horizontally or vertically) or gets knocked whilst in operation.. the drive is very sensitive because it spins fookin fast...

RIGHTCLICK SAVE AS - a 1.5mb vid of how it happens... from here

The video is good with sound...... almost painful!

It just so happens that i've had this problem myself with the xbox 360 the missus got me for xmas.......

The console doesn't have to be moved very much to cause the scrathes on the disc....... It happened with one of my games when i caught the console while it was running and made it wobble slightly. At this point i heard a slight scraping noise and when i checked the disc i had a lovely set of Saturns Rings around the disc. A workmate has had exactly the same scenario where the console was just caught or knocked when in use with the same unfortunate results.

Micro$oft get out of having to replace anything by including the comment about 'Never move the console whilst it has a disc loaded' in the manual. Although if the console had caused the damage without being moved i think you'd have a hard job proving it to Micro$oft.

I took mine in to a local games shop and had it repaired for
