IMHO you've paid around the right money.

Sounds like they are worried about shifting these. Good price, and the '53 has the longer gearing 6th, so you might get slightly better fuel economy when sticking to NSL fuel saving driving

I think you've knocked their price down to roughly what they paid for it + minimal margin to cover their costs

Yep, considering the Skoda warranty you will get, thats a very keen price, although tbh, I think the prices are becoming more aligned with what they are worth...

Just an update,

I am now finally part of the brotherhood/cult/order of vrs owners

took delivery of the car yesterday and while it wasnt as mint as they described (couple of stone chips, light scratches) it was certainly in very good nick for its age. Ive got a 12 month warrantee and 12 months free AA skoda assistance too.

Im a very happy bunny and now its just a case of getting used to the nuances of driving a diesel and figuring out whether i want to start adding seat intakes n strut braces etc etc

Good on ye , Run it for a few months before any mods incase you find some issues wanting to be covered under the Warranty .

Very wise advise. You've got a good deal there, and I think you can expect a few chips/scratches. The water-based paint used on newish cars is generally pretty rubbish so you're always going to have some marks.
